Awesome.... Dr says my back is "fucked up"

This has been the month to get all my medical stuff done and so far everything has been pretty decent. Just scheduled my sleep study today. So I call my Dr to set up my monthly appt and give them sleep study info and the Dr (who's a good friend) says he got my MRI from Monday and my back is "really fucked up". He said we would go into specifics at my appt this Thurs, but said he would also be doing a nerve study to get an early idea of how much damage is there.... I honestly can't believe this . I have never injured my back, I always use good form, and my back is very thick especially the erector spinae. Now I'm really fucking nervous. No I have to real competitive aspirations, but I love my deadlifts and squats and honestly I don't think I can give them up. I'm pretty upset. My heart fell into my stomach.

Wonder if it's disc related. Do any weightlifters maintain healthy discs in their backs?

what are your symptoms?????

Sporadic lower back pain, but when I do get it it shoots all the way down into my feet. Its extremely painful. Ive been getting adjustments and then trigger point massage with some shots of novacaine during this and im good as gold for a good two weeks. It can come from the most simple activities like when I pick up an empty bar to warm up and continues for the remainder of the day.
When the pain starts it doesn't stop regardless of what I do.

Instead of giving them up, why don't you just lightn the weight and focus more on reps and form? I know you love lifting heavy, but sometimes change is good. This way you can still do the lifts you love and take care of your back in one shot bro. Something to consider.....

Dude don't start Gettin stressed . Zeus has great advice. You don't want complete back failure to come to whatever is going on. Can't wait to hear bout your sleep study? Did u do it already. I did and swear I never slept a wink in the study but now my cpap is my best friend.. Lol

I think you need to wait until you get your results before you feel dejected.
Doctors have a way of putting things that are not always as bad as they seem.
I do think, to Zeus' point that you can drop weight and focus on range of motion but I think you already are probably doing this.
Good luck- keep us posted.

Hey Dude, like the guys said try to stay calm and wait till you see doc. Worse case scenario you may need to lay off those exercises for a little bit but there are plenty other you can do in the meantime. What is it with docs? You get a bad test result or something and they call you and let you know something is wrong, but hey you gotta wait till you come in here to find out WTF, I know the waiting sucks, gives you more time to try and diagnose yourself. Stay cool Dude and just be smart till you figure out what is going on.

Thanks guys. I'll modify my training a bit until I find out what's going on and what the specifics are. I already use a rather light for me weight usually, but it's still near 600lbs on deads for 12 and 500lbs or so for 12 on squats. When I go higher in reps I get gassed out and get dizzy, but getting in better cardiovascular shape wouldn't hurt. Either way I'll make it work. That's the number one thing in bodybuilding anyways is to train around injuries.
Any numbness, tingling, or trouble pissing?
I do get numbness in my legs and feet as well as tingling . No problems urinating at all.

Reminds me of a time I went to the Dr on campus at FSU and told him it was burning when I urinated. He did a few tests, but said "you have the clap or the G one and probably HIV". I told him its not possible because neither I nor my g/f at the time sleep around. His response was "if I had a nickel everytime I heard that I would've retired years ago". I wrecked my car on the way home I was so upset. I called my girlfriend and called her the most horrible things I could think of. It took me two weeks to get a hold of someone to give me my test results as no one called me or would return my call. I finally went back in and demanded my results. The Dr wouldn't see me, so the nurse told me I had prostitus.

Hey I've been lurking here for a while just absorbing knowledge but I just wanted to point out an article I read about a month ago about lower back pain ( the main topic was medical diagnosis ) in Wired magazine that would probably be a good read for you right now.

One of the worst things like you mentioned wrecking your car and yelling at GF is that something like this happens and you spend way too much time thinking about it. My dad had a stroke a year or so ago and I probably spent a good two months just thinking about it and worrying about it even when I'm at the movies or driving to work or trying to sleep.

Try not to get up in your head about it and take a look at this article that explains how those MRI scans don't always mean all the crap the doc claims they do:

I would post the whole thing here but it's a long one :)

With the numbness sensation down ur legs id put money on some lumbar disc issues and maybe spinal stenosis

Damn, i hate to hear that bro! Don't give up hang tight and see what is said and happens. You can overcome anything!

Im getting this fucking Blue Screen of Death thing, so Ive typed this 3 times. Sorry if short. Bro, Limbo sucks. Your a fighter thoough. Ok, unless your a fucking genetic freak (with or without gear), those are huge numbers you are pushing around. Look at Ronnie. His back is soo fucked up. I fucked up my shoulers and knee pushing insane numbers years ago. Im growing better now on lighter weights. Im like you though and that my conditioning sucks and its tough and hard to go high rep and more volume but Im getting there. Doubt your 25 or 30 years old anymore. It hurts me to say bc you know more than I by a long shot, but train smarter bro.
Hope it turns out ok!!!!

The initial distress and and concern has passed. Actually I'm only 31. Like you said there are so many bodybuilders that are so much stronger and larger than me, that they have to have damage to various areas as well. After thinking about it, it will just allow me to train a little smarter and I'm always able to use the super heavy weights after I get adjusted and my trigger point treatments. I'm sure I can get through it. I've gotten through worse. Thank you guys for the supportive comments.

I have to bang my head on the desk as I had a similar issue with a doc that said the same thing- although I wasn't sleeping with anyone or dating anyone and it ended up being prostatitis as well- finally found out it is really common when you stress out your body.
