Getting Rid of Gyno: Treatment Options

By George Touliatos, MD

Q: I’m running a cycle and have experienced a lump under my left nipple. Is this gyno, and how can I get rid of this?

A: Gyno is a multifactorial thing. It’s not only the result of estrogens, but also prolactin, DHT and IGF-1. Also, what matters is the ratio between testosterone and estrogens. In case you have developed gyno and it hurts, you have to use a SERM (tamoxifen-Nolvadex) that will occupy the estrogenic receptor. Using an aromatase inhibitor (anastrozole-Arimidex, letrozole-Femara, exemestane-Aromasin) is not beneficial since estrogens have already been formed; so it’s practically useless. Moreover, in case you are stressed, you have insomnia, you are smoking weed, you use certain painkillers (opiates) or even if you have hypothyroidism, your prolactin is possibly elevated and this might contribute to nipple soreness. Then you need to use a dopamine agonist like cabergoline or bromocriptine (Dostinex/Parlodel). IGF-1 elevation is the result of excess GH use, while DHT use can offer some anti-estrogenic effects. Zinc, DIM and chrysin are among the supplements that allegedly provide anti-estrogenic activity.
