Mason Jones and Mike Davis | Zuffa LLC Mike Davis and Mason Jones may have set a new bar for this week’s trio of UFC events.
Four days after Max Holloway’s memorable (if one-sided) main event scrap with Calvin Kattar, lightweights Davis and Jones stole the show on the UFC Fight Island 8 preliminaries Wednesday as they went back-and-forth for three action-packed rounds.
Davis emerged with the split decision victory, winning his second straight fight and handing Jones his first career defeat. Jones comes from the Cage Warriors promotion, where he won titles at 155 and 170 pounds.
Both men will receive a $50,000 bonus check, as will Performance of the Night winners Warlley Alves and Umar Nurmagomedov.
Alves proved that he would not be a showcase opponent for top prospect Mounir Lazzez, snuffing the former Brave CF and UAE Warriors standout in the first round with a series of vicious body kicks. It was an important win for the welterweight veteran, who was fighting for the first time since November 2019 and hadn’t won since May 2019.
The debuting Umar Nurmagomedov (cousin of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov) did not disappoint. Facing former M-1 bantamweight champion Sergey Morozov, Nurmagomedov showed off both his exciting standup game and powerful wrestling as he got the better of Morozov on the ground and choked him unconscious in round two. He improved to 13-0 with the victory.
