Six months earlier, Lesnar had impressed in his UFC debut against Frank Mir, but fell short after being caught by a Mir kneebar. The pro wrestling superstar and NCAA D-I wrestling champion was given another veteran in his second UFC outing and this time he would make good on his potential. Showing off his stunning physicality and elite wrestling, Lesnar dominated Herring en route to picking up his first win inside the octagon.
Lesnar was granted a title shot off of this performance and he capitalized, defeating the legendary Randy Couture by second-round TKO to become the UFC heavyweight champion in just his third MMA bout. He went on to successfully defend the title twice, returned to the WWE after a pair of losses, and then fought once more in 2016 before once again returning to pro wrestling.
