Santos and Teixeira both have contended unsuccessfully for the light heavyweight title and want another shot at the title. But in addition to standing in each other’s way, they’re also blocked, apparently, by an unexpected entrant into the 205-pound title picture. Current champ Jan Blachowicz, a previous Santos knockout victim, may very well face the middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, in his first title defense. The bout is not yet confirmed other than verbally, and the champion said he may not be ready to fight until well into next year. But the booking puts a little bit of a damper on the main event, which pits to hard-slugging Brazilians against each other in a pay-per-view worthy bout.
For Santos, it’s the first chance to re-stake his claim after blowing out both of his knees and yet beating now-former champ Jon Jones on one of three scorecards at UFC 239, while the 41-year-old Teixeira is on a four-fight tear.
