‘Shogun’ Rua shows nasty elbow injury suffered in Paul Craig fight at UFC 255

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua | Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC If it looked like things went downhill fast Mauricio Rua after the first round of his rematch with Paul Craig, there could be a good reason why.
Rua was forced to tap to strikes on Saturday in the main card opener of UFC 255 in Las Vegas, resulting in a second-round TKO loss to Craig. It was the first loss for Shogun in his past four outings, which includes a split draw against Craig at UFC Sao Paulo in November of last year.
On Sunday, Shogun shared a photo of an elbow injury that he supposedly suffered in the first round as well as a message in which he explained the circumstances while still giving credit to Craig for the win.
“Unfortunately things didn’t go out the way I would have liked last night and this is a part of our sport,” Rua wrote. “I suffered an injury to my elbow on the first time I was taken down, but this serves as no excuse, as it is part of fighting and it doesn’t take way any merits from my opponent.”
The photo of Shogun’s injury included in the Instagram post appears to show massive swelling at his right elbow. A larger version of the photo can be seen below, courtesy of Shogun’s manager Eduardo Alonso.
Eduardo Alonso Rua, who turns 39 on Wednesday, did not say if he expected the injury to cost him a significant amount of time, only mentioning that he plans to rest and consider the next step of his career.
“Now I’m going to rest with my family, and think about my career,” Rua wrote. “I know that my mission in this sport goes way beyond the octagon as well.”
