Garry Tonon went the distance for the first time in his MMA career to defeat Koyomi Matsushima | ONE Championship ONE Championship returned with live events Friday in Singapore, and grappling wizard Garry Tonon was the main attraction amongst MMA bouts.
Tonon went back to MMA after a string of grappling matches since his most recent ONE appearance in May 2019, taking on former ONE and Pancrase featherweight title contender Koyomi Matsushima, and used his grappling skills to clinch the victory.
“The Lion Killer” first threatened with a standing guillotine right off the bat, but put Matsushima in the most dangerous situation when they finally hit the canvas, spending minutes on a rear-naked choke attempt that Matsushima escaped.
Tonon spent the final three minutes of the second round trying to force the tap with another rear-naked choke, but Matsushima did not allow it. Matsushima reversed position in the final seconds to land heavy elbows and a knee to the head, but time ran out as Tonon returned to the feet.
The Japanese featherweight denied Tonon’s takedown attempts in the third, forcing the grappler to stand and trade for five minutes. Both fighters had good moments in the final stanza, but neither came close to seriously hurting their opponent. In the end, Tonon was awarded the unanimous decision victory to improve to 6-0 in MMA. Afterwards, he called for a shot at ONE featherweight titleholder Thanh Le next.
“Thanh Le, I’m coming for you,” Tonon said in the post-fight interview. “And not just you, I’m coming for the gold that you’ve hoarded around your waist. It’s mine.”
Bokang Masunyane and Rene Catalan wasted no time in their strawweight contest, but Masunyane was the one with the last laugh. The undefeated South African talent, who was on a six-fight decision streak going into the fight, secured the first knockout of his MMA career with a devastating kick to the head just 37 seconds into the opening round, dropping Catalan out cold.

Winner of eight in a row in MMA now, Masunyane said in his post-fight interview he is “the best in my division, and I’d like to challenge the champion.” The strawweight belt currently belongs to Joshua Pacio, who hasn’t defended his throne since a January split decision win over Alex Silva.
Jihin Radzuan and Bi Nguyen engaged in an exciting atomweight contest as both fighters attempted to get back to the winning column. Nguyen was first to secure a takedown, but ended up on bottom. She reversed position, but Radzuan was the one threatening on the canvas with guillotine, armbar and triangle attempts. Radzuan took it to the ground in the second stanza and worked on a rear-naked choke after taking the back, but was unable to force the tap.
Nguyen and Radzuan exchanged wildly in the final minutes of the third round before Nguyen finally got the takedown with seconds left in the clock, instantly getting to the mount and landing shots before time ran out. That last effort wasn’t enough to convince the judges, though, who unanimously saw Radzuan as the winner after 15 minutes of action.
In the card’s opening MMA bout, undefeated Indian atomweight Ritu Phogat improved to 4-0 as a professional with a dominating victory over Jomary Torres, securing the crucifix position and landing dozens of elbows and punches until the referee mercifully stopped the bout. Torres has now gone winless in six straight bouts after a 4-0 start to her career.
