“Da Last Samurai” took on Jose Quinonez in the bantamweight featured preliminary bout at Saturday night’s UFC Vegas 16 event. After a high-paced opening round, Smolka was able to pop back to his feet after an early takedown from Quinonez. Once back to the feet, Smolka landed a beautiful takedown of his own and transitioned right to mount, landing a flurry of unanswered punches which forced the referee to stop the fight.

Smolka bounced back from a first-round submission loss to Casey Kenney in May with his eighth consecutive victory that didn’t need the judges.
“I’m probably the most inconsistent guy that I know, but I try to bring the fight every single time,” Smolks told Jon Anik following the win. “I always try to bring the action and look for the finish. This time we played it a little differently and it ended up working out and I’m just so happy.”
Quinonez has now lost two straight and three of four, which includes stoppages at the hands of Nathaniel Wood and Sean O’Malley.
