Mayweather and Paul both announced the bout, hosted by fan experience platform Fanmio, on Instagram. Details on the rules and location were scarce. But pricing plans revealed lofty expectations for the promoters with prices weighted toward those who buy early, offering a $24.99 price tag for the first one million pay-per-views sold, $39.99 after one million sold, $59.99 for buys on or after Dec. 29 and $69.99 after Feb. 11.
Fanmio in August signed Mayweather to provide fan experiences and produce content for the platform. Logan Paul called out the undefeated boxer this past month as his younger brother approached a co-main event on Tyson vs. Jones Jr.; Jake Paul viciously knocked out former NBA player Nate Robinson in a clip that quickly went viral.
According to Triller, the social media platform behind Tyson vs. Jones Jr., the Nov. 28 boxing match, which was regulated by the California State Athletic Commission under a no-knockout rule for the aging boxing legends, reportedly garnered 1.6 million pay-per-view buys at a price tag of $49.95. That would make it the most successful combat sports event of the year.
The Fanmio event is not the first exhibition fight for Mayweather. In December 2018, he returned to the ring against MMA fighter and kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa and won via third-round TKO. The bout came 16 months after the 50-0 fighter stopped Conor McGregor in the blockbuster “The Money Fight” in August 2017. McGregor has repeatedly called for a rematch in the octagon, though UFC President Dana White indicated Mayweather’s follow-up would be a promotional venture.
Logan Paul started the YouTube boxing craze when he faced off with fellow online celebrity KSI for a match that reportedly garnered 1.2 million PPV buys. He lost the professional bout by split decision.
