The 37-year-old veteran lightweight suffered a devastating knockout courtesy of Jordan Leavitt this past weekend at UFC Vegas 16, which counted as his third consecutive loss in a row.
Afterward, UFC officials told MMA Fighting that Wiman had been released from the promotion, though he now says his contract was completed, and he plans to retire from the sport.
“Hey guys to be clear, I wasn’t cut, I wasn’t released,” Wiman explained in a text message sent to MMA Fighting’s Steven Marrocco. “This was my last fight on my latest contract, and we mutually decided I can fight it out and go from there. I decided to retire shortly after the bout.
“It was an easy, relieving decision that was harmonious with the promotion’s stance. This mind and body did everything it set out to do and more. Super pleased and grateful.”
Wiman, who was given a 45-day medical suspension after the knockout, was a mainstay in the UFC since 2006, facing a long list of top lightweights in the promotion while earning wins over the likes of Mac Danzig and Cole Miller. He took nearly five years off from active competition between 2014 and 2019 before making his return to the UFC this past year.
In his first fight back, he suffered a TKO loss to Luis Pena before dropping a decision to Joe Solecki in December 2019. He returned almost exactly one year later, but then fell to Leavitt at UFC Vegas 16.
If Wiman’s retirement sticks, he will hang up the gloves with a 16-10 overall record including a 10-8 resume in the UFC.
