The Brazilian middleweight was scheduled to face Aliaskhab Khizriev at a UFC Fight Night event on Feb. 6, but he was removed from the card after being hospitalized with pneumonia, Combate reported Saturday.
Turman’s manager Stefano Sartori confirmed the news to MMA Fighting and added the UFC fighter was hospitalized earlier this week. He stayed two nights in hospital under observation and was cleared to return home on Saturday.
According to Sartori, Turman has atypical pneumonia and needs to take medication for two more weeks.
Turman was in “really bad shape” in September after a positive COVID-19 test that cancelled a fight with Sean Strickland at UFC Vegas 12. But this time, he tested negative for the virus.
Speaking briefly with MMA Fighting on Saturday, Turman said he had shortness of breath and felt tired, but he is feeling better after a two-day stay in hospital.
It’s still unclear if the UFC will keep Khizriev on the card against a different opponent. “The Black Wolf,” a former Fight Nights Global welterweight champion, inked a deal with the UFC after defeating Henrique Shiguemoto at Dana White’s Contender Series in September.
The Feb. 6 UFC event is headlined by heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Alexander Volkov.
