According to a report from ESPN, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua signed a two-fight deal to unify the four world titles. The dates and venues have not been announced for the highly anticipated bouts to crown an undisputed heavyweight champion.
“This is the biggest fight in boxing and one of the biggest sporting events in the world,” Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn told ESPN. “It will be a major, major win for a country that wants to showcase itself.”
Fury is undefeated in 31 professional bouts and is coming off a seventh-round TKO win over Deontay Wilder in February 2020 to become the WBC and The Ring heavyweight champion. The victory came in a rematch from December 2018 where Fury and Wilder fought to a draw.
Joshua overcame his first pro loss to Andy Ruiz, a seventh-round TKO in June 2019 by earning a lopsided unanimous decision in the rematch six months later in Saudi Arabia. The WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO champion returned a year later to knockout Kubrat Pulev in the ninth round in London.
The report of the fight being booked comes a mere days after Fury said he stopped training during a Top Rank event due to frustrations with the negotiations for a bout with Joshua.
“I’m taking some time away from the game at the moment, because, like I said, I’ve been ready to fight since I beat Deontay Wilder last year,” Fury explained. “I’ve had no success in getting another fight. At the moment I’m just concentrating on getting me 10 pints of Stella.”
It appears as if cooler heads may have prevailed as the parties will now be able to take offers from venues and sites for the matchups, reports state.
