Esther Lin, MMA Fighting A potential No. 1 contender’s bout in the flyweight division has been booked for UFC 263 as Lauren Murphy is expected to face off with Joanne Calderwood on June 12.
Multiple sources confirmed the bout to MMA Fighting on Saturday with verbal agreements in place. MMA Junkie initially reported the contest.
A winner of four fights in a row, Murphy has stormed her way toward title contention and just recently inked a new deal with the UFC ahead of booking this matchup.
During her current streak, Murphy has taken out ranked opponents such as Roxanne Modafferi and Andrea Lee, but now she will fight with a chance to possibly earn a title shot with her upcoming bout in June.
As for Calderwood, the former strawweight turned flyweight has gone 2-1 in her past three fights, including a win over former title contender Jessica Eye in her most recent appearance. Calderwood had previously earned a title shot in the division, but with reigning champion Valentina Shevchenko sidelined with an injury, she ended up jumping into a late notice fight against Jennifer Maia. Unfortunately, she suffered a submission loss to the Brazilian before bouncing back with the win over Eye.
One more victory likely will earn Calderwood another opportunity at UFC gold.
The upcoming UFC 263 card is expected to take place on June 12, though there has been no location announced for the event.
