Tony Ferguson explains why he tweeted that Nate Diaz is his ‘b*tch’

Tony Ferguson | Esther Lin, MMA Fighting Tony Ferguson recently sent some fighting words Nate Diaz’s way, but as it turns out “El Cucuy” was just playing around.
The longtime lightweight contender has long been known for his colorful and creative social media message, and last week he sent out a message in which he referred to Diaz as “my b*tch.” The two both have bouts scheduled for the May 15 UFC 262 card, with Ferguson taking on Beneil Dariush and Diaz squaring off with Leon Edwards.
In the tweet, Ferguson suggests that it’s his name that played a big part in the event selling out the Toyota Center in Houston.
During a recent appearance on Submission Radio, Ferguson was asked about his choice of wording and he downplayed any major rivalry between himself and Diaz.
“Oh, he always has [been my b*tch],” Ferguson said (transcription via Denis Shkuratov). “It’s just some sh*t talk, just some light banter, man. I got nothing against the dude. He’s a good, solid dude. But when it comes down to the scrap game, it’s like come on, put ‘em up, put ‘em up.”
Diaz has fought sporadically in recent years, competing twice in 2019 after a three-year hiatus. When he steps into the cage on May 15, it will be over a year-and-a-half since he fought Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244 for the “BMF” championship.
Should Ferguson and Diaz see each other at UFC 262, there’s the potential for backstage fireworks. But Ferguson says he’s dealt with Diaz before and isn’t worried about bumping into him again.
“Dude, I’ve been around a bunch of Dagestanis trying to surround my family,” he said. “I’ve been around a bunch of sh*t in the fight game. I’m gonna be even real, even Nate trying to call my name. I held up my hand up saying, ‘Not now Nate, I’m busy,’ and went off to an interview.”
“I got nothing against the kid,” Ferguson continued. “He’s Mexican, so I got a lot of love for the dude. We just happen to be in different divisions. But we’re different weight classes, so I shouldn’t f*cking trip too much. Like I said, there’s plenty of piles for everybody, it’s just different, you’ve got to take an open look at it and not be so f*cking greedy going after the same f*cking ones.”
For Ferguson, what’s most important is that he finally gets the chance to compete in front of fans again after his two 2020 appearances took place behind closed doors due to the outbreak of COVID-19. And when the house is packed, Ferguson wants people to know that it isn’t because of Diaz.
“We all know who really sold the card out,” Ferguson said. “We don’t have to name names, but it definitely wasn’t Nate’s punk ass. You know what I mean? Like, seriously, just come out of nowhere like a f*cking turtle. I love it.
“But when it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter who sold it out or what. It’s awesome to be a part of a card that’s actually going to f*cking be exciting. So, s*it talking or not, gawking, or whatever you want to call it, the fans are gonna be there. They’re gonna be loud as f*ck.”
