Missed Fists: Wilson Reis gets knocked out in 16 seconds, more

This week, the unforgiving pendulum of MMA swung the wrong way for one of the game’s veterans as Wilson Reis found himself on the wrong end of a Missed Fists highlight. The last time we featured the one-time UFC flyweight title challenger he scored his first win since parting ways with that promotion by choking a man unconscious.
On Saturday, he wasn’t so lucky.

You know how the song goes. One day you’re fighting for a UFC championship, the next you’re getting merk’d in 16 seconds by a journeyman down in Mexico.
Donny Matos popped Wilson Reis with a right hand right on the button and that’s all she wrote for Reis at a recent Budo Sento Championship show.
Reis, 36, has now lost five of his past seven fights, but his previous four losses were to the elite of the elite: Demetrious Johnson, Henry Cejudo, John Moraga, and Alexandre Pantoja. This could be a crossroads fight for him, so if he’s nearing the end of his career, hats off to him for fighting his way into the top-five of his division after an inauspicious start to his MMA career.
[h=2]Ali Magomedov vs. Islam Abuev[/h]That was kind of a bummer, so how about we brighten everyone’s spirits with this lovely flying triangle courtesy of Ali Magomedov from an Eagle Fighting Championship event in Kaspiysk, Dagestan?
Slow that one down and check the mid-air flexibility. Can’t blame Abuev for getting caught in this one, that was locked on almost the moment they hit the mat.
[h=2]Daniil Egorov vs. Ganisher Juraev[/h]As fun as that was, it’s only fair that we also shine a lot on some outstanding submission defense. From a Kingdom Professional Fight in St. Petersburg, Russia, here’s Daniil Egorov showing us the best way to slip out of a kneebar.
We’ve said this several times in past editions of Missed Fists, but punching the F out of someone is always an effective counter to even the most advanced jiu-jitsu techniques. You’re opponent can make you tap if they’re unconscious. Think about it.
[h=2]Giovanni Lopes vs. Lucas Ferreira[/h]At Arena Global 11 in Rio de Janeiro, Giovanni Lopes gave us this week’s Humpty Dumpty award winner at the expense of Lucas Ferreira.
With respect to Mr. Ferreira, when you do a full-on belly flop into the middle of the cage, you’re going to go viral. Better luck next time.

Abdul Sami Wali Fayzi vs. Sergey Denisov[/h]Russia’s AMC Fight Nights Global promotion held its 100th show in Moscow on Saturday (full fights available on YouTube) and the top two fights on the card were odes to the late finish, though in different ways.
We showcase quick finishes so often, that we often forget to appreciate finishes that happen after the second round. Case in point, Dmitry Bikrev coming out of the gates hot for round three in the main event and just obliterating Goity Dazaev was a sight to behold.
Bikrev entered this fight as the Fight Nights welterweight champion and he didn’t need another 15 minutes nor the judges to decide the outcome of this fight. Make it eight straight wins now (excluding a no contest) for the eight-year veteran.
Lightweight champion Nariman Abbasov also successfully retained his title against the vastly less experienced Shamil Amirov. Abbasov entered this bout 25-3, while Amirov was just 4-1-1.
The action reflected that discrepancy as Abbasov pulled away in round two before doing everything he could to end Amirov’s misery in round three.
Another fighter with a flashy record, Vagab Vagabov, also showed out on Saturday, crumpling Eder de Souza with a sweet left hook.
Now 28-1, it’s a little surprising that the former World Series of Fighting competitor hasn’t received another look from a major North American promotion yet. Even at 35 years old, you have to figure he’d be a good fit for the PFL’s 2022 season or something.
Oh wait, I forgot about the time he went apes*it at a WSOF event. Disregard this suggestion.

Moving on, here’s Magomedgadzhi Sirazhudinov picking up a TKO win with a blink-and-you-missed-it uppercut.
Sirazhudinov, 24, improved to 9-1 with the finish and has now won seven straight fights.
And because it wouldn’t be a 2021 MMA event without some rules controversy, check out Abdul Sami Wali Fayzi straight stomping on a dude’s face and almost getting away with it.
Before you ask, yes, Fayzi did go on to win a decision. Remember children: Always. Cheat.
[h=2]Alfons Ap vs. Rysanda Julio Dirgantara[/h]

The other lesson for up-and-coming fighters? Don’t get fooled by that 10-second clapper.
I understand that a lot of pros just go on autopilot once they’re in the fight and the slightest interruption could cause them to lose focus, but Alfons Ap almost lost more than that at One Pride MMA Fight Night 45 this past weekend when he mixed up the clapper with the round bell.
I’m seeing a lot of the replies saying that Rysanda Julio Dirgantara should have just loaded up his hardest strike and aimed it at Alfons’ head instead, but he was probably confused by Alfons’ confusion and instinctively went for the back as it was presented to him. He almost got the choke too. Somehow, both guys were able to laugh that incident off.
In fact, Alfons would end up getting the last laugh as he was later declared the victor when Dirgantara couldn’t make it off the stool for round three.
[h=2]Bishop Le’i vs. Don McMillon
Efe Ajagba vs. Brian Howard[/h]Boxers Bishop Le’i and Efe Ajagba gave us two of the week’s best KOs.
First, in Salt Lake City last Friday, it was Le’i putting the capper on a successful pro debut with a monster counter left that caused Don McMillon to collapse into the ropes.
Pandemonium.
At a much higher level, we have Efe Ajagba continuing his winning ways at a Top Rank show in Tulsa, Okla. If Ajagba sounds familiar, you may recognize him from the bizarre disqualification victory he picked up a couple of years back after his opponent Curtis Harper fled the ring as soon as the bell sounded due to his abject fear of Ajagba.
Just kidding. It was actually over a pay dispute. But Ajagba’s opponent on Saturday, Brian Howard, he probably should have walked away before this happened to him in the third round.
Ajagba turned this man’s whole body around and maybe his whole life too.
[h=2]Janet Todd vs. Anne Line Hogstad[/h]ONE Championship is getting plenty of mainstream exposure in the U.S. right now with its TNT events, but I’d be remiss I didn’t put some extra shine on Janet Todd’s body-cracking kick.
I spoke to Todd prior to Wednesday’s fight and she said that she dealt with imposter syndrome when she made her ONE debut two years ago. There’s no question she belongs now, having captured a kickboxing title and recorded two spectacular muay Thai finishes (don’t forget her crackling head kick of Ekaterina Vandaryeva).
It’s unclear what’s next for Todd as current ONE muay Thai atomweight champion Allycia Hellen Rodrigues is sidelined due to pregnancy, but if that belt is vacated or an interim title is introduced, you can bet Todd will be one of the fighters competing for it.
