The 2021 World’s Strongest Man is making a voyage back to California for the first time since 2014. Up until now, fans only knew that WSM signed a multi-year deal with the Visit Sacramento Sports Commission (VSSC) for the premier strength sports competition to occur in Sacramento in 2021, 2022, and a yet-to-be-announced third year. In addition to the news that in-person fans are now allowed to attend the show, this is the first time the venue has been officially announced.
According to the California Department of Health’s website, the state “fully reopens the economy” on June 15, 2021 (the same day WSM begins). This means any event that is not a Mega Event (defined as 5,000 people indoors and 10,000 people outdoors) will operate with few restrictions. According to the CDHP, these include:
- Vaccine certification or negative testing is required for indoor Mega Events and recommended for outdoor Mega Events.
- There are no capacity limitations for indoor and outdoor settings.
- There are no physical distancing restrictions for indoor and outdoor settings.
- People must adhere to the CDHP’s mask guidance.
In total, 25 men will compete for the ultimate title in strength sports. Nineteen of those strongmen competed in the 2020 WSM, including returning champion Oleksii Novikov, runner-up Tom Stoltman, and third-place finisher JF Caron.

The event will consist of three qualifying days followed by two Finals days, where the top 10 athletes in the qualifying stage (two athletes from each of the five groups) will compete. There will be 14 events in total, including a train pull and the new Titan’s Turntable.

In 2021, WSM will offer behind-the-scenes coverage, including results, on Facebook. Former BarBend Editor Nick English and 2019 WSM winner Martins Licis will host the Facebook Live show.
The entire WSM contest will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network and CBS Television Network at a later date, following the event’s completion. In 2020, WSM was broadcast to 70 different countries and territories and accrued close to 500 million household views.
