The race to the deadlift world record is heating up. It seems Iranian strongman Peiman Maheripourehir refuses to take a rest day, as he was back in the gym on June 23, 2021, to deadlift what appears to be his heaviest “raw” pull on camera. Wearing only lifting straps, and with his team hyping him up, Maheripourehir locked out 450 kilograms (992.1 pounds).

In the sport of strongman, lifting with straps is still considered raw. This is different from powerlifting, where a raw lift is performed without any additional equipment beyond a lifting belt. This means that Maheripourehir successfully moved a barbell loaded with a weight 51 kilograms (112.4 pounds) pounds shy of the current heaviest deadlift ever — 501 kilograms (1,104 pounds) by 2018 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champion Hafthor Bjo?rnsson. The major difference is Bjo?rnsson wore a lifting suit for his lift. Check out Maheripourehir’s latest deadlift below courtesy of his Instagram page:

A week and a half before this pull, Maheripourehir deadlifted a 440-kilogram (970-pound) deadlift without a suit. Two months before that, he hit the third heaviest deadlift ever recorded — 492 kilograms (1,084.7 pounds) — while wearing a lifting suit. Right before the turn of the new year, he scored a 435-kilogram (959-pound) deadlift double. All of this is to say that his trajectory over the last six months in the gym has been steady gains to his deadlift, making him arguably the primary threat to claim a new deadlift world record.

It’s not clear when Maheripourehir intends to make a world record attempt — and he may have to plan to lift more than the current benchmark of 501 kilograms (1,104 pounds). Fellow strongman Gabriel Peña has already said he intends to shoot for a new world record on August 14, 2021, at the Giants Live 2021 Manchester World Open. Peña did not state by how much he will attempt to break the record. Still, even if he advances the record by a single kilogram the way Bjo?rnsson did (the previous record was Eddie Hall‘s milestone 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) deadlift), it will be a weight no human has ever accomplished.

Training to lift a never-before-done weight is certainly unique, but these are unique athletes. Although neither Peña nor Maheripourehir competed at the 2021 WSM contest that was recently wrapped in Sacramento, CA, it appears both men are ready to battle on the world stage.
