Nick Walker: Rise of the Mutant

By Steve Blechman

“If you want to be a champion, you have to talk like you’re a champion, act like you’re a champion, work like you’re a champion, inspire and motivate like you’re a champion.” –Nick Walker

2021 New York Pro champion Nick Walker is one of the most exciting rookie pros to come on the scene in years. His nickname is “The Mutant,” and one look at his 250-pound package of rugged, thick and grainy muscle explains why. At only 26 years old, he’s bringing a whole new legion of fans to the sport, a group that calls itself “Walker Nation.” Nick’s popularity and respect in bodybuilding has grown as impressively as his massive physique, which is why he’s on the cover of this month’s Muscular Development.

In “Heir to the Throne?” Ron Harris speaks with Nick as this RAW Nutrition athlete begins preparations for his first Mr. Olympia this October. Nick tells us about his recent New York Pro win, how he fosters belief in himself and encourages it in others, and how he’s training to be the best bodybuilder alive.

You don’t have to look far to find obese rappers – they are commonplace in the music industry. Look no further than artists such as The Fat Boys (two of three of which are already deceased), Heavy D, Notorious B.I.G, Big Pun, Fat Joe, and Rick Ross. Action Bronson used to fit into that mold, until he reached an all-time high bodyweight of 380 pounds and decided to change his life. Read about the rapper, chef, and TV star’s inspiring weight-loss journey in “Action Bronson: From Fat to Fit!”

Bodybuilding and its related divisions offer a variety of physiques that will appeal to many different fans, and one of the newest divisions is Wellness. This division is for females with athletic physiques that showcase more body mass in the hips, glutes and thigh areas. The upper body is developed but not to the same degree as the lower body. Ace physique photographer J.M. Manion showcases the top competitors in this division and explains more about it in “The Women of Wellness: Muscles With Curves.”

Many of us meant to get in shape for summer, but for whatever reasons, it didn’t happen. Maybe the plan was to start cutting at some point in the spring, but you never set a date. Then Memorial Day came and went, and you still hadn’t begun shedding body fat. The beaches in this first post-pandemic summer are open, and you still don’t have a shredded physique to display. Is it too late? Have no fear, MD’s Ron Harris is here. You can get a beach-ready look in time for the final weeks of summer. Ron tells us how to shred up in record time in “Last-Minute Summer Cut!”

The supplement company giant Redcon1 has had an excellent gym near its Boca Raton, Florida headquarters for a couple of years already. In May, they opened their doors to a much larger and far more elaborate facility in Nashville, after extensive renovations and stocking the gym with top-of-the-line equipment. There were over 5,000 people at the grand opening with an all-star crew that included Kai Greene, Dana Linn Bailey and Blessing Awodibu. “It’s now unlike any other gym in Tennessee, maybe in America,” Redcon1 owner Aaron Singerman noted. MD gives you the story of how this second location came to be, the challenges faced, and why this instantly became a prime destination for all bodybuilders and serious lifters in “Music City Muscle! The Redcon1 Gym Comes to Nashville.”
