The inaugural Strength Score Championships: Battle for New York is set for Nov. 13, 2021, in the Hype Gym located in Union Square, Manhattan. The contest will feature athletes competing to obtain the highest “strength score” measured by how much weight they lift, the number of times they lift it, and the range of motion they move that weight.

On Oct. 5, 2021, Dr. Pat Davidson took to his Instagram page to call out the advantages that shorter athletes have in competition CrossFit® competition:

Do CrossFit competitions really tell you who the best in the world is when it comes to exercise fitness? No.

Davidson argues that the shorter athletes have the advantage in competitive CrossFit® competition. Taller athletes performing the same number of reps as shorter athletes have more distance to move. Davidson believes that the taller athletes are “penalized for every inch difference” between them and the shorter competitors — all that added distance adds up over the course of a multiple-day contest:

2021 Strength Score Championships
The 2021 Strength Score Championships will aim to level the playing field for taller athletes competing in exercise fitness competition. An athlete’s strength score is weight times reps times range of motion. Participants will have the agency to adjust their weight and range of motion while performing reps of a given exercise to score points. Their score will increase as they increase any of those three categories.

It’s the truest test of fitness and resistance training that’s ever been come up with.

Since the range of motion is calculated into an athlete’s strength score, taller athletes will be compensated for moving the same weight further than their shorter counterparts each rep.

Two Circuits
The Strength Score Championships will consist of two circuits comprised of three exercises each. The first circuit is akin to a powerlifting meet, featuring the big three lifts — squat, bench press, and deadlift:

Circuit One
  • Barbell Squat
  • Barbell Bench Press
  • Barbell Deadlift
The second circuit will feature the leg press, the overhead squat, and a machine squat (instead of a barbell squat).

Circuit Two

Athletes will have two minutes to perform each circuit to complete as many reps as possible for the highest cumulative strength score.
