On April 20, 2022, hybrid athlete Fergus Crawley became the 184th human to successfully lift the Dinnie Stones — the legendary pair of Scottish stones in Potarch, Aberdeenshire. The Dinnie Stones are two unevenly weighted stones that strength athletes attempt to lift via a Jefferson deadlift and hold for as long as possible, or farmers carry them for distance. The current world record is held by strongman Kevin Faires from the 2022 Rogue Record Breakers event and was formerly held by 2016 Europe’s Strongest Man (ESM) Laurence Shahlaei.
Very pleased to have joined the small list of successful lifters.
The larger of the Dinnie Stones weighs just over 188 kilograms (414.5 pounds), and the smaller one is slightly heavier than 144 kilograms (317.5 kilograms) for a total of approximately 332 kilograms (731.9 pounds). Check out Crawley stagger his stance between the stones, chalk grip the circular metal handles embedded in each rock, and lock them out before turning to the camera with a smile of success in the video below, courtesy of his Instagram page. For the lift, Crawley is adorned in a kilt and wears a lifting belt:

According to the caption of his Instagram post, Crawley’s successful lift in Potarch fulfilled a childhood dream for him. He first learned of the Dinnie Stones a decade ago and made it a goal of his to eventually travel to Scotland to join the ranks of those before him who hoisted the stones off the ground.
What these represent is…being able to explore myself, new challenges, and new frontiers with my fitness.
While Crawley is not a strongman athlete, a Jefferson deadlift is well within his wheelhouse as a functional movement. Crawley wasn’t the only athlete to score his spot in Dinnie Stone history. Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Crawley’s coach Jonny Pain was also present in Potarch and lifted the stones as well.

Crawley’s next competition will be the CELTMAN! Extreme Scottish Triathlon, which is part of the XTRI World Tour® — a series of triathlons across the globe, including in Brazil, Spain, Chile, Slovakia, Taiwan, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, Montenegro, Canada, Norway, USA, and, of course, Scotland.
I have a very Scottish dominant year of strength and endurance ahead of me.
We’ll see if Crawley checking off a decade-long strength goal via his Dinnie Stone lift generates the momentum he needs to excel in his upcoming triathlon.
