The fitness, comedy, and documentarian duo the Buttery Bros — Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers — took their YouTube channel on April 25, 2022, to share their journey to a place many have wondered about but few embark on endeavoring. They followed the wisdom of Brian Johnson, better known as the Liver King, to heed his nine tenants “to thrive in the modern world.”
Since not everyone is in a position to eat liver for all meals, hunt for game in the wooded foothills of the vast expanses of the countryside, or possess the shredded bodybuilder-esque physique of the Liver King, these nine tenets are “steps to optimize your everyday habits,” according to the Liver King’s website. We’ll talk about what those nine tenets are, but first, check out the whole adventure of the Buttery Bros in the video below:

Liver King’s Nine Tenets
Below are the nine tenets the Liver King espouses for “re-discovering your primal self and paving the path towards better living.”

Sleep
Eat
Move
Shield
Connect
Cold
Sun
Fight
Bond

Each tenet is associated with an emblem reminiscent of inscriptions one might find in an ancient caveman’s dwelling.
Buttery (Liver) Bros
The Buttery Bros journey begins with a feast for a king — more specifically the Liver King. The camera pans across a spread of raw bison liver, raw bison heart, and raw bison bone marrow. The duo sprinkles some salt on the uncooked delicacies while shirtless and adorned in Viking helmets, horns and all, dip the livers in maple syrup, and proceeds to bite into them while resisting the urge to vomit.
Liver King’s promotion of these kinds of foods is not for the gimmick of his bearded, muscled aesthetic or his “Primals” as his followers have been dubbed. Rather, it is an opposition to the processed foods that are so prevalent throughout many peoples’ diets.
Drop the processed garbage, the seed oils, and the liquid calories. Start incorporating more whole foods.
Following their feast of raw meats akin to a carnivore’s diet, the Buttery Bros step outside to “Connect.” The goal of the fifth tenet is to stand barefoot in direct contact with the Earth for 10 minutes per day, which supposedly assists in lowering anxiety, improves sleep, and fends off unwanted electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs).
Going out of order is not a concern in living out the Liver King’s tenets as the Buttery Bros embrace the fourth tenet — “Shield.” Functionally, the fourth tenet involves training, more specifically with a farmer’s walk. Canon and Sawyers warm up their forearms by rolling them out with the sleeves of a barbell, loosen up their quads with a pair of foam rollers, and perform some shoulder mobility work on the floor.

The video cuts to a segment centered on Canon, who explains that while the Buttery Bros adventures can often seem wild — even saying that much of the footage of the Liver King appears “barbaric” — the goal is to learn from all the different people in the fitness space, experiment with new things, and implement into their lives what works for them. Canon essentially translates a mission statement for the Buttery Bros YouTube channel:
…all of these people we can learn things from. We take this knowledge, put it into our shows, and make all of us live a more buttery life.
Back to the training session, Canon suits up in a 65-pound backpack, grabs 45-pound dumbbells in each hand, attaches himself to a 70-pound sled, and five-pound ankle weights. Sawyers matches all the equipment but adds five pounds to his backpack and reaches for 35-pound dumbbells. They move that weight for four lengths of a 400-meter course. By performing this workout outdoors, the Buttery Bros fulfill the event tenet: “Sun.” Simultaneously, they achieve the eighth tenet: “Fight,” which is to persevere through the pain and struggle of being in “harm’s way,” or to strive for something of value, which is represented, in this case, by pushing through the fatigue of training.
The Buttery Bros enter the denouement of the video by fulfilling the ninth tenet: “Bond.” They sat on a bench outside and enjoyed a pair of soft-serve ice creams in waffle cones. As the night falls, they plunge into an ice bath in their garage to fulfill the sixth tenet: “Cold.” They bid their viewers farewell in their Viking helmets as they settle in to fulfill the first and well-earned tenet: “Sleep.”
