2022 WSM Drop Outs
Unfortunately, it’s not unusual for strongmen to drop out of contests — either before the event starts or during. Here’s a list of competitors who have already withdrawn.

What to Know About the 2022 WSM
If you’re not a die-hard strongman fan, you can (and will) still enjoy the thrill of the competition. Here’s what you need to know about this year’s show to keep up with your local gym bros.

Tom Stoltman is the returning champion. Last year, he defeated four-time WSM winner Brian Shaw in an epic Atlas Stone showdown to claim the coveted Barry Frank Trophy and become the first Scotsman to win the event. He won by three points — 45.5 to 42.5.
This is the show’s second year in Sacramento and ninth time in California. In 2021, WSM inked a deal with the Visit Sacramento Sports Commission (VSSC). As a part of the deal, Sac-Town hosted the show in 2021, 2022, and will for a third year (date TBD).
This is the first year that WSM is hosting a Fan Festival. It’ll be free and open to the public at the Capitol Mall and include food trucks, local vendors, special events, giveaways, and a general admission viewing area for fans to watch the action live.
The Flintstone Barbell event is making a return after 17 years. The movement is a behind-the-neck press, except it eschews weight plates for giant rocks. At the 1995 WSM contest, strongman Gary Taylor successfully locked out 463 pounds. Brian Shaw, in training, hit a 445-pound behind-the-neck press with a standard barbell.

How Strongman is Scored
Strongman scoring is pretty straightforward. First place can earn as many points as there are competitors. In the Qualifying stage, you can earn a maximum of six points (since there are six athletes in each group). First place gets five points; second gets four, and so on. In the Finals, where there will be 10 competitors in total, first place gets 10 points; second gets nine, third gets eight, and so on.
In the event of a tie, points are split. If two athletes tie for second, you would add up the second and third place points and divide by two. So, in the WSM Finals, two athletes who tie for second earn 8.5 points each (nine plus eight divided by two).
