The race to set a new world record deadlift is heating up. Rauno Heinla of Estonia took to his Instagram page on July 10, 2022, to share a video wherein he successfully deadlifted 450 kilograms (992.1 pounds).
Not only is this a monumentally heavy lift for the 40-year-old Heinla, but it is also 14 kilograms heavier than the current strongman Masters deadlift world record of 436 kilograms (961.2 pounds), scored by Mikhail Shivlyakov during the World’s Ultimate Strongman (WUS) “Feats of Strength” series.
Deadlift felt hard today. I’m still happy it went up.
Heinla performed the lift in socks and utilized a lifting belt, lifting straps, and a deadlift suit. His recap in the caption explained why he shook his head in seeming disappointment after lowering the barbell. Check it out below. 2019 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) Martins Licis can be seen in the background cheering Heinla on:

Although Heinla did not appear satisfied with how the lift felt, he pulled it from the floor to the lockout in one smooth motion. Hitching the barbell is legal in strongman and a move some strongmen use to hoist heavier loads as it can help generate more force once the barbell is above the knees.
Heinla stated that he would rest following this lift and add more to the barbell next time. That next time could very well be at the 2022 World Deadlift Championships (WDC), which are part of the 2022 Giants Live World Open, taking place on Aug. 6, 2022, at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.
Heinla is one of the 12 strongmen competing at the 2022 WDC who could challenge 2018 WSM champion Hafthor Björnsson‘s all-time deadlift world record of 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds). Thus far, Björnsson and 2017 WSM champion Eddie Hall are the only two people ever to deadlift at least 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds).
Judging by Heinla’s training lift, he could officially claim the Masters deadlift world record officially at the 2022 WDC. The two most likely strongmen with the potential to claim the all-time deadlift world record are Ivan Makarov and Peiman Maheripourehir, who have on-camera PRs of 490 kilograms (1,080.3 pounds) and 492 kilograms (1.084.7 pounds), respectively. Maheripourehir’s lift is the third heaviest deadlift ever caught on film.
