“Please remain in your seats,” the stadium announcer cautioned to the audience moments after Bulgarian weightlifter Karlos Nasar, 18, clean & jerked a new Junior and Senior World Record of 220 kilograms, or 485 pounds.
Despite besting his own Junior record by 11 kilograms and beating the previous Senior record by three kilograms, 89-kilogram Nasar was not ranked at the 2022 International Weightlifting Federation’s (IWF) World Weightlifting Championships (WWC) because he did not post a Total. Check it out:

Commentators during the Men’s 89-kilogram Group A event called Nasar “the most dangerous weightlifter in the world if he can land a snatch,” at the conclusion of the session — the young Nasar failed all three of his snatches in the first half of the event.

The stadium was overfilled for the Men’s 89-kilogram Group A session, considered to be the most competitive single session at the 2022 WWC. However, the event was fraught with surprises and upsets.
Debatable favorite Tian Tao of China pulled out of the competition at the last moment citing altitude sickness on social media. When Nasar missed his final snatch (he attempted 173 kilograms twice and 174 on his third attempt), the field opened for several athletes to contend for the gold medal.

Ultimately, it was Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Keydomar Valenilla Sanchez who would post the highest Total; but Nasar was the only weightlifter to post a new World Record on the day.
Men’s 89-Kilogram Group A Podium

1st place: Keydomar Vallenilla Sanchez (VEN) — 385 (175/210)
2nd place: Brayan Rodallegas Carvajal (COL) — 381 (170/211)
3rd place: Liu Huanhua (CHN) — 381 (166/215)

Note: The notation above refers to the athlete’s best Total, bolded. Their best individual snatch and jerk are parenthesized.
Nasar was ineligible to register a Total having missed all three of his snatch attempts. Still, his massive 220-kilogram clean & jerk exceeds the former Junior record of 211 and also beats Antonino Pizzolato‘s 217-kilogram record from the 2022 European Championships.
Nasar attempted 220 at that same meet to beat Pizzolato, but couldn’t clinch it at the time.

Despite failing to register a Total, Nasar — the 81-kilogram World Champion from 2021 — is a force to be reckoned with at only 18 years of age.
