Meet Thomas Evans: MHP’s Newest Pro Strongman

“When you think of Strongmen, and you think of companies that supported the sport of Strongman along the way, and you obviously think of MHP.” -Thomas Evans

MHP is home to some of the strongest men on earth, and the latest athlete to be signed by the company as part of its heritage of showcasing top Strongmen is Thomas Evans, strength and conditioning coach at the University of Delaware. Evans has been steadily rising up through the ranks of Strongman competitions in the last few years with the goal of becoming the World’s Strongest Man.

“I’m really excited to be a part of that team, for sure,” Evans said. “It gives me a sense that I’ve made it into the Strongman rankings. When you think of Strongmen, and you think of companies that supported the sport of Strongman along the way, and you obviously think of MHP.”

Evans scored two big wins last year: placing first in the Arnold Amateur Strongman at the 2022 Arnold Sports Festival, where he took home the title of “World's Top Amateur Strongman,” and placing first in the Shaw Classic Open. He is now qualified to compete as a pro in both the Arnold Strongman Classic and the Shaw Classic in 2023.

“Thomas has all the attributes to become the World’s Strongest Man,” said Gerard Dente, President of MHP. “His natural strength, fierce work ethic and knowledge in training and nutrition have allowed him to excel fast and he’s just getting started. I’m excited about his future and being a part of Team MHP.”

Evans added,“Having the support of MHP, I feel like I’ve kind of made it a little bit. There’s still a tremendous amount of work to do but I can’t be grateful enough to be part of their team and a very long line, list of athletes that have been part of that company, and I’m going to be one of them now, so for me it’s a surreal and very humbling experience, for sure.”

Football to Strongman

Evans started training for Strongman after his professional football career, where he played for the Green Bay Packers. “Once it was time to stop running so much and just get as strong as possible, that’s when the Strongman career started,” he said. “About the time I was done with football was when ‘Born Strong’ came out on Netflix. I watched that a couple of times and said hey, why can’t I do this? That show followed the Arnold. Watching that show I thought, I can be there one day. That day is coming.

“I’ve always loved lifting weights, and that was a big part of how I played the game of football. There’s more carry-over than people would realize. You’re training as hard as you can for a goal; it doesn’t matter if you’re part of the team or an individual athlete. Looking at the athlete as a whole picture is pretty important in either one of those sports, and making sure you’re touching all your bases in your training.”

Proper Recovery

At the University of Delaware, Evans said, “We spend a lot of time talking about proper recovery, and making sure we’re eating, sleeping. Every aspect of everything you do is important for the recovery aspect. So I spend a lot of time talking to athletes about that to make sure they are following their protocol so they are doing what they need to be doing.”

When it comes to his own recovery, Evans’ favorite MHP products are PROBOLIC-SR muscle-feeding protein, HYPER CRUSH™ pre-workout and DARK MATTER post-workout muscle growth accelerator. “Obviously we’re looking for, in any kind of strength sport, your ability to feedconsistently over a period of time throughout the day is extremely important, and that’s what you find with DARK MATTER and PROBOLIC, making sure the body is continuously feeding and continuously recovering. It’s extremely important for me in a job where I’m pretty active as well. Leaning on HYPER CRUSH™ when I need it, making sure I’m not wasting a training session, but definitely relying on those recovery aspects of DARK MATTER and PROBOLIC to make sure I’m ready to go for the next training session, because sometimes for me it’s 16 hours before I’m training again, so I rely heavily on those to make sure I’m ready to go and in top shape.”

World’s Strongest Man

One title that Evans has his eyes on is World’s Strongest Man, which he’d like to win in the next four years. “There’s potential to get there quicker, but there’s no give me’s. You’ve gotta fight, scratch and claw for every opportunity you get. I fought really hard to get the two opportunities I got in 2023. Hopefully if I prove myself in those enough, I’ll be able to open the doors for more big-name competitions. We’re going to have to see. I’ve still got to go out there and earn it, and that’s the exciting part. Make the most of your opportunities, because you don’t know how many you’re going to get.”
