With a combined six CrossFit Games appearances and three top-10 finishes in the team division, Christian Harris and Kelsey Kiel are undoubtedly two of the premiere athletes in the sport. And both have now joined FitBiomics, a probiotics company founded by its CEO, Jonathan Scheiman.
Talking exclusively with BarBend, Kiel spoke on her decision to partner with FitBiomics,“It felt like perfect timing because I was looking for a probiotic to incorporate into my daily routine. In my trial run of taking Nella, I noticed a significant improvement in my gut/digestion. I also pay attention to my Whoop data and I noticed a significant increase in my recovery scores over the time.”

TIn my trial run of taking Nella, I noticed a significant improvement in my gut/digestion.
The company produces Nella, a daily probiotic for women and men that supports gut health and digestion and delivers benefits to sleep and energy. It was developed by analyzing the guts of the world’s top 0.01 percent of athletes.

Nella is a daily probiotic supports gut health and digestion while also delivering benefits in sleep and energy. It is made with a blend of three exclusive Lactobacillus strains promoting a healthy and diverse gut microbiome.

Nella is made with a blend of three exclusive Lactobacillus strains based on innovative technology developed at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University. Visitors of the Fitbiomics’ website will see the claim that guides Fitbiomics’ belief in producing Nella:
The key to better health is in your gut.
Why is the gut so important to one’s health? — because the microbial ecosystem, also known as our microbiome, comprised of genomic organisms, affects development, functionality, and health. This complex ecosystem adapts to environmental conditions, the interactions of which “play important roles in maintaining general health and wellbeing,” according to the Journal of International Microbiology. (1)
Much of our microbiome is shaped by diet, environmental exposure, antibiotic consumption, geography, and physical activity.
That begs the question: how is Fitbiomics decoding the microbiome of elite athletes like Harris?
Decoding Elite Microbiomes
Partnering with phenotypes (i.e., super performers) like Kiel and Harris allows Fitbiomics to study what works for their “physiological demands in today’s environment and modern stressors” and adapt those learnings to products like Nella. Per Fitbiomics, their process is fourfold:

Extract bacterial genetic information from microbiome samples for next-generation sequencing and bioinformatic analysis.
Assess their microbiome compositions.

How do they compare to non-phenotypes?
What differs between phenotypes from other disciplines?
How does their microbiome change over time?

Identify strains that are unique or enriched in elite phenotypes.
Use microbiology and culturomics techniques to purify, validate, and develop our strains for functional testing and commercialization

When extracting microbiome samples, Scheiman says, “…elite athletes…represent the 0.01 percent of the human population in terms of optimal health and physiology. We could basically study their microbiomes longitudinally pre and post-exercise to see how it changes from…performance to recovery phase…analyze that information in athletes by different sports compared to non-athletes.” Determining what is “enriched” in the guts of elite athletes can help inform how to use technology “to purify those probiotics.”
Forging Elite Partnerships
In an interview with BarBend, Scheiman was asked what made Harris and Kiel stand out as an ideal fit to work with Fitbiomics. Within his answer, he magnified the overall goal of Fitbiomics:
“We want to fundamentally change how we understand and optimize our bodies through the microbiome and microbiome innovations,” said Scheiman. “Our core thesis as a company is to decode the biology of the fittest people in the world, understand what makes them unique, and then translate that information into next-gen nutrition that could benefit health and longevity in the broader population.”
When determining who the fittest people in the world are, singling out those competing at a level of functional fitness for the title of Fittest on Earth® makes the search much easier.
“It’s a community that really is synergistic with our vision for applying the microbiome and gut health for healthspan.” Harris and Kiel’s competitive accolades involve performing as team players, and that extends even off the competition floor. Scheiman said “there was a lot of mutual excitement towards bringing this to more people to help them in their daily lives.”
