Gabriel Peña has his sights set on the record books. Registration for the 2023 World Strength Games (WSG), set for September 15-17, 2023, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL, opened on March 15. The contest is part of the Florida Fit Expo and will gather some elite strongmen attempting world-class lifts.
Among those athletes is Peña, who took to his Instagram page on March 16, 2023, to call his shot: he will attempt to set a new American deadlift record at the 2023 WSG.
I’m heading to Florida to carve my name in the history books. September 15, the American deadlift record will fall at the 2023 World Strength Games.

A cash prize of $20,000 will be awarded to anyone who sets a new American deadlift record, upping the stakes beyond just a rewrite of history for Peña. There are two American deadlift records to consider depending on the barbell used at the 2023 WSG.
According to both Starting Strongman and Strength Results, Jerry Pritchett is the current American deadlift record holder, thanks to his 467.7-kilogram (1,031-pound) pull at the 2017 Rogue Record Breakers event. While that is the heaviest recorded deadlift in competition by an American strongman, it was performed with an Elephant barbell, which has more give than a standard Olympic barbell.
Per Strongman Results, the heaviest deadlift in competition by an American strongman on a standard barbell is 453.5 kilograms (999.8 pounds) by Evan Singleton at the 2021 World Deadlift Championships, won by Ivan Makarov. Of note, all strongman deadlifts for max reps are typically performed equipped, though there is no separate record for raw versus equipped lifts in strongman like there is in powerlifting.

Peña has lifted 1,000 pounds in training before. A few days after his medical withdrawal from the 2020 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) contest, Peña hit the gym and locked out 1,000 pounds while wearing lifting straps. If the event at the 2023 WSG uses a standard barbell, then Peña has shown that he’s at least capable of tying Singleton’s record.
Even if Peña hasn’t progressed his deadlift in the past three years, which is highly unlikely, he would only need to add a pound to that 2020 PR by September 2023. Given the circumstances, rewriting the history books doesn’t seem like it will be a what-if but more of a by-how-much for Peña in Florida.
