Breaking a world record in any division in powerlifting is a noteworthy event. After all, rewriting the record books is no small feat. The journey toward that milestone is often unnoticed but as crucial as the moment of ascension.
On April 4, 2023, 125-kilogram powerlifter Eleuterio Montalvo competed at the 2023 USA Powerlifting (USAPL) High School Nationals. At 18 years old, he weighed in at 124.1 kilograms, claimed the gold, and captured the third all-time heaviest raw total in the Teen 18-19 division of 868.5 kilograms (1,914.7 pounds).

According to Open Powerlifting, the 2023 USAPL High School Nationals was only the third sanctioned meet of Montalvo’s young powerlifting career — all in the 125-kilogram weight class. He remains undefeated.
In the raw Teen 18-19 division, Montalvo’s total from the 2023 USAPL High School Nationals is 1.5 kilograms shy of tying the second-heaviest total of all time held by Corentin Clément. Clément achieved his 870-kilogram (1,918-pound) total at the 2019 EPF Arnold Classic Europe.
The current all-time raw total world record in the Teen 18-19 division is 891.3 kilograms (1,965 pounds), scored by Larry “Wheels” Williams at the 2014 RPS Pennsylvania State Championships. Suffice it to say Montalvo is on par with some elite company.
Montalvo did not share anything about his performance at the 2023 USAPL High School Nationals on his social media. However, with more than a year until he moves into the Junior division (ranging from 20 to 23-year-old lifters), Montalvo could challenge for Wheels’ record that has held firm since 2014.
