DE deadlift tonight

Here's a pic of tonight's double effort pull. Just a nice, easy double at 705. Unfortunately, I'm starting to feel it already. But I'm definitely happy to be done with this one!

I've also got a bunch of pulls from tonight on video so if anyone is interested in watching a clinic on pulling sumo (j/k LOL), maybe I can email a clip to you (unless MC has a way to host avi's). The video is shot from the side so you can see how I setup, the bar position relative to my shoulders, my hip action, and the lock-out.

It's sitting on Hi8 analog tape, so I'd have to hit up my brother-in-law for his DV camera, dump it into that, then edit the footage on the PC, and convert it to AVI.

Damn! Impressive! Looks like you put some size on from the last picture I saw of you. Love to see the video.

ill watch man, whats your weight?

Most sumo pulls i see there hands are narrower. Where about u from?

I may or may not make the 242 class. If not, I'll be a light 275'r next month. I've been forced to widen my grip because my tri's and lat's have grown so much that they force my hands out wide. If I force my grip closer, it puts tremendous strain on my left elbow (supinated grip).

i understand. I was never a fan of sumo. Felt like i couldnt use the strong part of my legs. Great pull man. LIke the gym u use those are the best.

so how are your other 2 lifts?

*looking down at the floor and kicking imaginary stones* Great pull man, I always thought my deadlift was pretty hefty until now. Thank you for making me feel like a total nancy boy.....*cries and runs out of the room*

.. that makes my back hurt to just look at.

that's a huge amount of weight.

I'm with Badgermoon on that - looks painful. BUt congrats, and I hope your back doesn't suffer for it!

Looking at that pull makes my spine feel like a brittle breadstick. I would love to check out the AVI on your efforts. Let us know when it is available.

Getting out of the hole is about the same for both conventional and sumo...it's ALL about glutes & hamstrings (not quads). Once the bar starts moving, it's your quads and your core that drive your body up to the point where your back takes over. The big difference for me between sumo and conventional is with sumo there is absolutely ZERO strain on my lower back when my technique is dialed. With conventional pulls, I feel a lot of strain in my lower back and that's because (1) the distance to lockout is much greater than sumo and (2) the movement is not as fluid (compact) as sumo.

So my lower back/spine is just fine. There is no discomfort whatsoever today. But the big sumo pulls will really destroy your MIDDLE back/lats. Because by the time your back starts pulling the weight (transferred from core/quads), the bar is already up to your knees. Remember, your lower back, abs, & the entire waist area serves to stabilize your core which will permit you to pull big by preventing your hips & butt from bailing upward. If that happens, your chest falls forward, the bar drops, and you're doing a bent row, and no one on Earth is going to row 700+.

My bench sucks so I won't talk about that (arms too long--the very thing that makes me a good deadlifter) and my squat was really good up to the point where I stopped doing rear squats about 18 months ago. I have been working very hard on improving my front squat which actually has improved my deadlift tremendously.

The reason is because when you unrack 365-405 in front, the strain on your mid-upper back is ENORMOUS. The bar is pulling so hard because it wants to fall straight down. This forces you to tighten your mid-upper back to prevent YOU from collapsing forward. With rear squats, you don't have to do this because the bar is resting comfortably across your rear delts/traps. So the front squat has really complimented my deadlift, but I plan on switching back pretty soon since my back is the weakest link in the front squat which is causing my leg training to suffer, I think.

I haven't noticed my leg training suffering and I've been doing front squats exclusively for about a month and a half now.......
I may have to try the sumo deadlift on occasion, though - I hurt my lower back deadlifting on a day in Feb. when my body was telling me absolutely not to go any heavier.......that shit's still bothering me
Oh well, that's what ibuprofin's for anyway, right?? lol

well i do back squats, and front squats, and i usually rotate them, with dead. But now that i cant do dead, I dont know what im goin to do.

I know the feeling all too well, bigshug. I've twice seriously injured myself pulling. One took about 6 months to rehab, the other a full year. Now I train smarter and make sure my technique is dialed. My suggestion is to take it easy and let things heal.

I really want to take it easy....but once I get into the gym...well, you understand. I'll learn my lesson one day....lol
