I just saw the news on the CNN ticker, which said that body builders using Insulin for strength and endurance gains may suffer brain damage.

Never mind, found a link:

Bodybuilders risk death by using insulin booster bought from diabetics
By Maxine Frith, Social Affairs Correspondent

Diabetics are selling their life-saving insulin to bodybuilders who use the drug as a performance booster.

The black market in the diabetes drug is revealed in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, which says nearly one in 10 bodybuilders may be using insulin to increase stamina and muscle tone. Doctors warned that bodybuilders risk serious injury and even death by taking insulin.

Dr Richard Lynch, an A&E consultant at Pontefract General Hospital in Yorkshire, investigated the problem after he treated a 32-year-old bodybuilder who collapsed into a coma after taking insulin.

"The man was brought into casualty unconscious last year," Dr Lynch said. "We assumed he was a diabetic who had overdosed but when he came round he admitted he was a bodybuilder and had been taking a friend's insulin to enhance his performance. He said it was a common practice.

"Even after collapsing in a coma, he was not going to stop using insulin."

Insulin is available only on prescription but the regulations allow diabetics to access repeat supplies over the counter at pharmacies. Dr Lynch said: "Some diabetics are buying more insulin than they need and selling it on. It is a secretive process, so we don't know how much it is being sold for, but we know it is going on."

One fitness instructor told Dr Lynch that 10 per cent of the bodybuilders he knew were taking insulin. It helps to build muscle by increasing the storage of carbohydrates and amino acids. If taken with glucose, or sugary food and drink, it also increases energy supplies and improves stamina.

The prescription insulin is undetectable from naturally produced insulin, so anti-doping tests at contests will not pick it up. But doctors have warned that insulin use can be fatal for non-diabetics. It can take so much sugar from the blood that the brain is deprived of oxygen, causing coma, brain damage and death.

Nothing really new. Slin is very dangerous and those who choose to use it take big risks espesially if they are not educated about it. If you want to use it learn as much as you can first.

This article seems like it'd make more casual bodybuilders use insulin than scare them away! Just remember that insulin IS dangerous, so be careful!

Not something to mess around with, unless your well informed and did your homework!!

I hate articles like that, one idiots causes a whole shitload of problems for the rest of the community. Now I dont know the whole story and didnt read it but on the guy that collapsed and went into a coma, I can bet/guarantee that he didnt take in enough sugars and probably wasnt an experienced slin user. My advice for all those who use slin use your brain and do your h/w and have a damn safety net!!!

Well, I don't know about insulin....but I DO know that ephedra stuff'll kill ya just as soon as look at ya

yeah

You said it.....all it takes is one shmuck....

I am a insulin user and I have only had 2 or 3 run ins with hypo and they were not at all that bad....once you feel it comming on you just drink a shit load of sugar and it goes away in about 5 minutes....but I know if I would wait 5 more minutes to take that sugary carbs in I would pass the hell out....When it hits you can just feel your bain slow down and your body get weak....

you just have to make sure you have a back up near by....just incase you do get it...

I've been using slin for a while now. Less than a year but used alot. I've done the cautious way and the stupid way. I've done the 2 weeks on 2 weeks off and never had any probs so then did a 16 week on believe it or not and came off w/ no probs. I use it now and then when off cycle and just started a new cycle and plan on using it ED for 10 weeks 2x's daily (was on gh at the time too though). I know everyone thinks I'm crazy but I do not believe it's that dangerous if used correctly. I've almost gone hypo quite a few times and after using it so long I don't even hardly worry about what I eat cuz my meals and slin supplementation is so routine. For beginners all I can say is keep extra glucose, dextrose, or any sugar around to be safe. After a few close calls w/ the stuff you will know exactly what insulin feels like and the risk you are taking will be far less because you know right away when the onset of hypo is starting...

I also could be wrong but I firmly believe that becomming diabetic from slin use is far overrated. I think it occurs from your body producing antibodies to the exogenous slin and those antibodies can't distinguish b/w that and your natural slin thus you fight off your own slin and become diabetic.

I've used slin so much the past 10months or so both for long and short periods. Multiple times daily and very high doseages and never have had a hint of being diabetic when discontinuing useage. So I plan on staying on throughout my cycles. Perhaps I'm stupid and many of you probably think I am but I think if I am gonna become diabetic from it I would have already. So the risk, which I don't think really exists for me at least, is one I'm willing to take.

Also staying on slin for long periods of time while on gh will actually help prevent diabetes. GH supplementation alone w/out slin can lead to diabetes.

Anyways it's early and that's all I feel like rambling about slin for right now...

I agree with you big josh....i think slin is over rated....but I still think you can become a diabetic from go over board....I believe the pople that run the biggest risk are those who run humulin R...that is the one that peaks after 2 hours and stays in your system for 4...will it will really stay around for almost the entire day...I think it is fine to run slin for longer periods of time as long as you are using humalog...that is the fast acting that will peak in 20 minutes...

When I firsted using I used hujmulin because it was easy to get....but you have to play with it...since it peaks at 2 hours then you have to take it 2 hours before your workout...timing is very crucial...that is the whole point...unless you are on gh...

anyway the faster the slin gets in and out the better....but humalog is only available by prescription so unless you know a doc you are out of luck....
