Six Sigma is a statistical measuring system that lets you know how close you are to your quality goal in production. It is a Quality program commitment that companies like GE and Motorola use to insure very very few defects in all products produced.
At six Sigma you only have 3.4 defects in a million products produced.
At Three and 1/2 sigma you have 35000 defects in every 1 million produced - big difference.
look at it this way:
One Sigma = 68 % of your products are acceptable
Three Sigma= 99.7 %
Six Sigma=99.999997%
You may have guessed I work for a company that implemented Six Sigma.
Saks - As I mentioned six sigma is a quality control process. As cchapel explains it can be used to minimize product defects but it can also be applied to many other aspects of a business. Here is the link to the GE site where they explain how they use six sigma.
