Tell me about cardio...

So what is this thing you weightlifters call "cardio"???

Naw,, really tell me and whoever is reading this thread what your typical cardio workout entails.

Do you do cardio before lifting? After lifting? On different days than lifting?

How long does your cardio session last?

Most importantly, what do you do while cardio-ing?

What time of the day are you doing cardio?

Me, if you care to know, I warmup on the bike for about 10 minutes - then hit the treadmill. I run about 2+ miles or so in my 20-minute routine. I am going to be adding sprints at the end of the 2-mile run.

I always do cardio after a workout. I workout and cardio 5 times a week. This is generally late at night, around 10:00pm.

I usually do cardio after lifting-sometimes 20 min sometimes up to 45. I have always targeted my HR at 60% of my maxHR. But I did engage in a thread not long ago with homonunculus where he had some pretty impressive info regarding using a higher intensity(HR) for better overall burning of fat. I keep telling myself to give it a try, but killing myself on the stairmaster is about as much fun as watching cars rust. Since it is winter and i wont be regularly hitting the beach until March I give cardio a break -try to pack on some muscle. Usually for entertainment while doing cardio I will just check out some of the hotties in the gym...To be honest i am really starting to have doubts about all this cardio stuff anyway..

I'm not a weightlifter, which BTW is someone who trains to maximize performance on the olympic lifts (snatch and clean and jerk), but the cardio routine I've done over the past 6 years has been:

None.

My cardio lasts about 6-10 minutes depends how into it I am. It usually involve lots intensity. Anyway I get all sweaty.

The snatch-my favorite exercise...I do as many sets and reps to failure as I can....

I do prefer the snatch as well, but unfortunately end up doing a reverse clean and jerk: jerk then clean... I'm gettin' damn good at it though!!! LOL

higher intensities takes you out of the aerobic lactic cycle though. almost any trainer will tell that an optimal fat burning exercise is cardio at a maintainable level (you should be able to have a normal conversation with someone without gasping for air) if you do it for 30 min to even sometimes an hour, you can lose a ton of fat deposits. and it should be done after the lifting because your energy stores have already been depleted and so you dip into your fat deposits for energy.

straight out of my kinesiology class (my teacher would be so proud lol)

I just bumped the thread "Burn more fat during Cardio" where randy and I discussed some of this-I think he made some pretty valid points for HIT

Unfortunately i too am familiar with this excercise...proper form goes out the window sometimes....
and I truly believe that it is this excercise alone that is responsible for my right upper arm being 3/4 inch bigger than my left!!! LMAO!!

My cardio consists of. Morning walking from bedroom to bathroom. Evening walking from couch to kitchen.:D

J/K

During bulking I do very little. Maybe treadmill 2-3 times a week for 15 minutes just to make sure my heart is still beating.
Cutting I do morining first thing 30-40 minutes on the treadmill and 20-30 minutes in the evening after training. I know the evening isn't the best time but with my schedule that seemed like the best place to fit it in.

Understood.

SS, That is a problem for most trainee's. Fortunately, to perform the reverse jerk and clean at all, I must use a two handed technique (Under-over). I reverse my grip periodically and have managed to maintain pretty good balance. LOL

Too late to change it up now...such a creature of habit...cracked me up with the over and under comment.LOL

cardio is calistenics which i incorporate side by side with weight training. since 1975 i do 300 situps and 300 pushups every day along with calf raises, pullups. mountain climbers, jumping jacks etc. as i grow i stay hard and ripped and never bloated even when bulking.
