U.S. to Ban Dietary Supplement Ephedra

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has decided to ban the herbal weight-loss supplement ephedra from the marketplace because of concerns about its effects on health, government officials said Tuesday.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and Food and Drug Administration chief Mark McClellan were to announce the ban at a midday news conference, the officials said, speaking only on condition of anonymity.

The ban is likely to be met with litigation from manufacturers who dispute the agency's assertion that ephedra, which was blamed in the death of a professional baseball player earlier this year, is a health risk.

The government ban, one of the first involving a dietary supplement, comes after Thompson this summer urged Congress to rewrite a law that rolled back dietary-supplement regulations and to require manufacturers to acknowledge potential side effects.

Ephedra has been linked to as many as 100 deaths, officials have said. And Congress gathered testimony from families of people who are believed to have died from its side effects. Among those who testified were the parents of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, who died during spring training last February while trying to lose weight. Toxicology tests showed ephedra in his system.

Executives of several companies that make ephedra-based products have said that studies have proven that they are safe when used properly.

"Anyone who has read our label knows that we go to great lengths to inform our customers about the proper use of our products," said Russell Schreck, chief executive officer of San Diego-based nutritional supplement-maker Metabolife International. "We make it quite clear on our label that the ephedra products are not to be sold or used by minors and that customers with certain pre-existing medical conditions should 'consult a physician before product use'."

But several scientists said that it was impossible to prove whether ephedra was safe because studies screen out participants who have health problems _ the people most likely to be hurt by the product.

The General Accounting Office, Congress' investigative arm, looked into the issue and found many people who reported problems had followed the label's instructions.

The FDA had proposed warning labels and dosage limits for dietary supplements with ephedra back in 1997, but then withdrew the proposal after complaints from the industry and members of Congress.

In 2001, the National Football League banned its players from using ephedra as a dietary supplement.

This is so friggin' typical of our government. I honestly think they have forgotten that there was a revolution in this country 200 and some years ago because of lack of freedom.
It is sad that a ballplayer died during practice, but how the hell can it be blamed on a supplement when the guy was way out of shape to begin with?
Seems to me that the feds want to make it hard on athletes of all sorts as anything that is effective gets "banned". What we need to do, AND MUST DO, is ORGANIZE!!! Perhaps the mods here can team with mods on other internet boards, periodicles, magazines and sponsor a signature drive that will get these dumb bastards in congress to loosen the reigns on supplements.
This has been done before! I do not have this literature handy right now, but I do recall in the early 1990's the FDA set out to make all supplements available by prescription only! NO SHIT!! If this legislation had passed then the bottle of vitamin C at walmart that costs 3 bucks would have required a script-and that same bottle would cost us probably 30-40 bucks. David Kessler was the director of the FDA -I would love to write some choice words for Kessler but i will refrain for now.
if anyone wants to organize, by God let me know-I will be the first to sign a freedom document!!

Been banned here in Canada for some time, but 99% of gym in my area you can still go buy it off the shelf. I think fine is 210.00 or something which is a joke for what they make selling it. O ya, also BCAA or any amino alone is banned, pro-hormones all illegal. But you can go buy any type of slin OTC. Great logic!

Unfortunately here in the US when something is banned, it is gone. Black market is usually the only source. The FDA has done such already with products such as the essential amino acid l-tryptophan and I am suprised Andro and its cousins are still available. The FDA plays for keeps here bro-they bring the swat team, federal marshals, federal prison sentances, the whole shooting match.

This type of banning really pisses me off. What they need to do is put age restrictions 18+, on things like this. There's no reason to completely ban this. I'm sure it causes significantly less sideffects/deaths than smoking or alcohol... yet they don't do anything to those products. (and they shouldn't!)

I hate everytime they make it a crime to make a personal choice which doesn't affect anyone but yourself.

This is exactly why people should write their congress representatives. The only way to defeat this kind of legislation is to organize-and when millions of voters demand a change they will get it. Until then, nothing will happen.
Today's banning of ephedra smells of politics to me. Since ephedra is an herb and can not be patented there is no real profitability in it's use even though it is effective. I am sure the prescription drug industry is very excited about the banning of it's number 1 competitior-their sales will soar. And since many of Big pharma's products are patented, their profitability is quite substantial.

Boy am i glad that i just got two bottles of super strengh ripped fuel. Hey lab-corp, this looks like a great opportunity to offer ephedra so that we can all research its effects in our labs.

I personally think the FDA should stay the F@#* out of peoples choices of what to take and not to take. Not to mention look how the statistics for this were presented in this article and I quote..." linked to 155 deaths and dozens of heart attacks and strokes."... If it was truly linked to "155 deaths" why are there only dozens of heart attacks and strokes? That whole statement doesn't make a lick of sense. Maybe the the couch potatoes over did it and pushed themselves too far. Is this ephedra's fault or is it more than likely their own fault for being out of shape to begin with? If the FDA was truly concerned about our well being they would shut down all the fast food joints... because that is what truly is killing more Americans each year than the now "demonized" ephedra...

I used to get 10, 1000 tab bottles of white cross ephedrine hcl 25mg tabs for $50.00 back in the "80's" 10,000 tabs!

How many died from alcohol consumption or Tylenol?

You are exactly right bro. Total bullshit. total politics. But check this out-herbalists and acupunturists are trying to use some leverage where they can still dispense it-they do not use it for weight loss, but for actual health problems. Ma Huang (the herb that contains ephedra) has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Find an acupuncturist-might be able to get a source if you are lucky.
One more thing-how about the possibility of starting a signature list or something for MC members and other boards members to unite and flood washington with hate mail over this?

Now I need to find something else to get that "adrenline rush" feeling. Just another day in the life of an adrenline junkie.

Might still have an option-I am not real sure how it will work out though. The acupuncturists and herbalists and Chinese medicine practitioners use Ma Haung in treatment of disease-this is an herb that contains ephedra so I have read. These practitioners are trying to get an amendment to the legislation so they can still use it-these practitioners use it in a disease state, not for weight loss. I believe it is used in bronchial situations according to Chinese Med. Might be able to hook up with an acupuncturist or Chinese Med practitioner if the bill is amended. Just pretend you are having bronchial spasms or something.
