The Accutane handbook

There has been a lot talk about accutane the last months on the boards and I think it could be useful for many to clear things up a bit around this product. So therefore I found this afticle on AF about what you should know about this medicine.

If you have acne after your 18-20 years old you will not get rid of it naturally and you should do something about it.

Acne is also very heritable. There is a big change that your have acne because someone in your family have it.

What is Accutane ?
------------------------
(in general)

Basically Accutane is a high dose of a-vitamins. Your actually taking a big overdose of a-vitamins when using it.

Accutane is a special medicine that is prescribed to people having moderate to bad acne. If you feel that the acne are a big problem for you, and you've tried milder medicines like Tetracycline, Skinoren, Dallacin, Benzoyl or Retin-A without good results, then accutane is probably the solution.

Costs
-------

Accutane is a very expensive medicine.

Dosing and cycling
-----------------------

The thumb-rule derms use when prescribing accutane is 1mg per kg bodyweight. So a daily dose for a male like me weighting 100kg would be 100mg daily. For woman the thumb-rule is 0,8mg per kg bodyweight.

Accutane is taken in one dose daily with dinner. So if your taking 4 20mg tabs daily for example you would take them all with your dinner meal

An accutane cycle would typically have a duration of 3 to 4 months. The special thing about accutane is that you can actually choose how much you would take daily, as long as you take the total amount of tabs. The rule is 600 20mg tabs taken over a given time. Under is two examples of cycles that would give the same end result:

Examples for a male weighting 100kg:

Cycle if the person is afraid about too much side effects:
80mg daily * 600 20mg tabs = 150days cycle

Normal cycle:
100mg daily * 600 20 mg tabs = 120days cycle

What to expect
-------------------

My derm told me that he had treated about 150 patients with accutane. 95% of them had no problems with acne at all after the cycle - permanently. A few individuals had to ran two cycle of accutane to get rid off all acne. In general my derm is very found of this medicine.

Side effects and treatments
-----------------------------------
(in general)

The most common side effects of accutane are:

*Dry skin
Treatment : Use oil in the water when taking a bath, and good motioner through the day.

*Dry lips
Lip balm

*Pain in joints and muscles
Acetylsalicyl-acid

*Avoid direct sunlight
Use strong sun-cream

*Dry eyes
artificial tear-liquid from your pharmacy
(contact lenses should be avoided under the cycle)

*Womans must not get pregnant under an accutane cycle

Because accutane is quite toxic you normally take a blood test before an accutane cycle and one more after 6 weeks.

Alcohol should be kept down to small doses (or avoided)- like 2 beers instead of 15. You will get much easier drunk while on accutane because your liver will be busy with trying to brake down a-vitamins.

Bodybuilding and accutane
----------------------------------

The permanent effect of accutane could be destroyed by the use of steroids and also a high protein intake. This is probably quite individualistic.

If your planning to try doing a steroid cycle while on accutane, do not take any orals like dbol or anadrol since your liver is under hard pressure.

i was on acutane when i was 16 years old and it was the worst experiance of my life that shit made me so fuckin depressed it wasnt even funny besides makein me lose mad weight and make me feel like shit all day long fuck that i wont ever touch that shit again

But even though this stuff makes life hell, I have witnessed more than one of my buddies get rid hereditary acne that was horrific more than once, and to the date it has never come back.

I'm about to get on accutane, I'll let you guys know how it goes.. the only real reason I'm getting on it is because I'm tired of putting creams on at night etc etc.. morning.. cleaning.. waiting.. etc.. its a hassle. So my Doctor was basically like yeah, here is a pill solution and the acne will never come back. :)

Scary Sides

I've did a couple of cycles of Accutane when I was younger (16-18) and it cleared me up completely. The sides were never that bad for me...but Roche, the company that makes Accutane is currently being investigated because it is alleged that Accutant can cause psychiatric disorders such as depression and suicide. If I'd known that a few years ago I don't think I would have taken it.

Ok, started yesterday. They have me on 40mgs a day currently. ONe dose a day. They also prescribed me some lip ointment, which by the leaflet that came with it says it is known to supress the hpa axis... umm.. is that bad?????

I never had many sides other than drynes in skin and joints.
For some with deep bleeding cystic acne which scars it is a god send.
