160lb dumbells

Bently

Our gym has dumbells in 5lb increments all the way up to 125, then the only real heavy set is 1 pair of 160's. So the 125's are too easy now with DB shrugs so I had to use the 160's. The damn things look like they're bigger than me!!
Wouldn't it make more sense to have SOMETHING inbetween??

KR

I have a similar problem in that after 100's, all dumbells jump by 10 pound increments instead of 5 pound increments 140s and then jump straight to 160s. Not only that but the handles get fat at the 110s and they are not "locked" (they rotate.. .arghh). I think that if I had small handles that were locked, I could press 180s instead of 160s. That may not be all that impressive to most of you but I am not considered to be very strong.

I don't know how to take you, exactly, but it sounds like you think I am bragging. If that is the case, I assure you that my numbers are not at all impressive. So, just for reference, here you go:

Never squatted over 405 and only hit 405 for a couple sets and that was on a smith machine.

never benched over 365 thought I hit it for two, one time a couple years ago.

hit 275 on overhead press once for 3 or so and that was on a smith press. haven't been able to get there since as my bodyweight at the time was over 250.

I bent row 315 but only twice this year as it is just too damned heavy for me. 275 is heavy but I can do it.

I am just not considered very strong. Yes, I can hit 160s but thaty might be my most impressive lift. How sad is that?

you're right it's hard to figure out where people are coming from when you can't see them. i didn't think you were bragging at all, i was just very jealous that you can push that much!!!

the most i've ever push was probably 100-105's for a couple of reps. I can push a shitload with my legs, but for the most part my upper body is nowhere close to my legs.

i've got a sometimes sarcastic sense of humor, but i always joke with people.

no offense here on my part, just jealously. :D

No sarcasim intended but you sound pretty strong Skip. 160's ain't bad at all. I Squat 385 for sets of 6 but only 225 for bench, 225 for bentover rows, and 100's for incline db. Everyone has their lifts.

That's to bad...The gym I go to has Db in incraments of 5lbs up to 200s. I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually use the 200s.

My gym sucks!! there is not ONE gym in the whole damn city that has dumbbells over 100 lbs! My gym is repainting, and putting in a damn smoothie bar!! but they cant buy us more equipment!. Its a worlds for gods sake. there are 10 competitive bodybuilers, but they cater to everyone else.

I recently joined another gym that goes up to 150s. I personally have never used em though. I pressed the 130s for some reps but that's as far as I've gone there. Got the 100s for shoulder presses 7 reps the other night and that felt good. Skip, your lifts are great bro. I wouldn't say you're not strong by any means. I get discouraged sometimes watching guys do twice my weights, then I look in the mirror and at them and feel better. It's how I look that counts, and I look better than them! :D

That is exactly how I feel. I SAY that I couldn't care less about the weights as it is more important how you look BUT I do get discouraged sometimes when I see something like a 225 lb lying tricep extension or a 185 lb curl. Hell, I haven't curled over 60 dumbells in YEARS and probably only curl 125-135 on a bar and they look more like power cleans. lol

You are right, everyone has their lifts. It is just that I would love to get 405 or 495 on a bar and back out of a squat rack with it. If I did, my knee caps would probably shoot across the gym. hehe

Funny thing Skip-ever notice when you're standing on stage nobody asks "what do you bench,squat......"-they usually just say "congratulations"

my gym goes up to 140lb dumbells, but the next size dumbbell is 200lbs. now how many people actually use 200lb dumbells. only thing i could think of is lateral rows or maybe shrugs, but im sure not at that level yet...MM

LMAO.....ok big guy now FUNNEL that anger...yeh thats it! remember vengeance is sweet!

It wasn't anger, really, just disappointment. I have made the necessary changes and especially on presentation/color, etc..

I have the "dial" down. It is the small things that I left out.

I do get your point, though, and I am extremely focussed for this year.

I start my prep tomorrow and am excited about it.
