Questions on squats

Just getting into 20 rep squating and was wondering about;
--do you wear a pad or heavy shirt for the bar or do you get use to the pain?
--is it imperative that you do a set of chest pullovers immediatly after you finish?
--what other exercises do you do on squat day?
thanks.

1. I wear any kind of shirt.... I kinda like the bit of pain from the bar....

2. Why would you do pullovers right after doing squats? (if people do this it is new to me....)

3. Leg presses and Leg extensions. Sometimes lunges.

big squaters dont feel the pain!
but seriously,, your should be so focused on your lift that the bar or your wraps arent even a thought. afterwards....your quads should hurt!

I used to have problems from the bar, but I eventually got used to the pain. When I first started doing squats years ago I did use a pad, but my work out partners would get on my case so much that I eventually stopped. The pain never really stopped because I was always going up in weight. But you will find ways to ajust to the bar. And as for doing any other exercises, I Would just stick to one muscle group a day. Legs are a big group and require alot or energy for a good work out. I don't see how those two exercises could benifit from each other, Does anyone else?

no pad, just a shirt or sweatshirt. you'll get used to the bar on your back.

chest pullovers???.....I'm stumped on this one too, not sure why you'd consider doing these on leg day.

other exercises you can do, extensions, presses, hacks, lunges, etc.

if you need a leg workout hit me up.

LOL. Tugs, sounds like you've been reading too much old school Joe Weider.

Joe called 'em breathing squats: superset a 20repper (with deep breathes at the top of each rep) with pullovers to stretch the costal cartilage and expand the rib cage. I wouldn't bother with those.

As far as a pad, I usually just reach into my purse (which is alway on my shoulder ever since I had a Gucci stolen a few months ago) and pull out one of my tampons. Light for light days, heavy for heavy days. Perfect!!! It makes it *very* comfy to squat with that *nasty* bar on my back. Just make sure you tuck the string out of the way: Sometimes it can tickle you on the cheek - kinda distracting. <he, he>

; ^ )

I'll squat, do leg presses, ham curls, extensions (rarely now), hacks (not as often), SLDL's (very rare on squat days). All the usual thigh exercises. Mostly its thighs by themselves. Calves are usually on another day, but not always. I use so many different splits its hard to generalize, but I can tell ya that squats count for twice the number of sets of damn near anything else (except deads), so the # of other exercises is pretty limited.

Damn, that was funny bro.... lol

Old school Weider is dead on.

I remember doing the breathing squat/pullover combo when I was about..... 17, I believe. The pullovers didn't do shit but I gotta tell ya, the breathing squats upped my squat poundages BIGTIME over about 4 months. I started at 135 and went up 10lbs every week for damned near the entire 4 months. Remember, I was only 17 so my regular squat was probably only about 225 for low reps of maybe 6-10.

I would recommend breathing squats, to be honest. I think that one of the biggest things that limits a set of squats is not the strength of the muscles but the exhaustion factor from not getting enough oxygen.

Just my opinion but it did work well for me.... back in the Old School Weider Days. ;)

LOL. I used to teach a wt. training class. I'd have young guys come up to me and ask where the pad was. (They were squatting like 95 lb most of the time.) I'd tell 'em that there's a pink one lying around somewhere, but if they can't find it, they could ask Alice across the way for a tampon to use instead. LOL. That either got 'em squattin' like a mad man or they gave up (which probably would have happened anyway...)

Ahh, the memories. I remember the squatting being hell, too. By the time I got on that bench, I thought I was gonna rip in half from the pullover. I bet my face looked like that kid from Bugs Bunny who used to hold his breath and turn his face red, then purple, then blue, then redder, etc. LOL.

Ya know, there's something to that idea having your breathing under control when doing a 20 rep set of squats. I wouldn't say its as much physiological as psychological. Its a matter of getting that groove going where you have control of the discomfort of having all the weight up on your shoulders...

Skip, did you ever get in freezing cold water to induce shivering thermogenesis?... I had a little pamphlet that came with one of my Weider supp.'s. It might have been my favorite wt. gainer called, "HUGE" LOL. In it, the guide recommended something like 1 hr a day in water cold enough (like the ocean during the winter) to make you shiver. Supposed to be a great way to get lean!!!

Shit, I hate cardio, but anything was better than sitting in a freezing cold shower, which I admit I tried a couple times. I think I got sick once doing that shit... LOL
