i personally dont think there is a better movement for getting your chest rock hard.once a week i do the deck of cards method with push ups.for people that dont know that its , you take playing cards and flip one over to decide your amount of reps.faces are 10 and aces is 15.do that without stopping it equals 367 total reps as fast as possible.man your chest well be on swole.and hurt for a week too lol

i'm sure there are benefits to doing push ups, but I don't see how they could be better than resistance training.

I've often thought about what I'd do if I had no gym or weights available to me. It would be pushups, pull ups and crunches. High reps too.

Muscle growth occurs with failure at low reps...pushups can only get you so far. To get big, you gotta add weight.

WOW!! It amazes me how many contradictions there are in bodybulding. I am sure I will get flamed or put down but I I'll feel better....

Getnbigr-- If pushups are not resistance training please explain what is, although I am sure you worded that wrong.
Pumpseeker-- Again you probably worded that wrong, ofcourse muscle growth does not occur only from failure at low reps. As you stated in the following sentence "To get big, you gotta add weight" is a hek of alot more accurate
Crankinn stein--- I understand your statement based on the consesus although IMO it is way off. Diet is really the only way you can "get ripped". Although if you can explain to me that high reps cause a more toned muscle as oppossed to, say, 8-15 rep range I am all ears. Maybe I have just never heard a valid explanation.
Sorry for paying such close attention to detail, maybe I am just being a pest.
As far as push ups go,, I am a walking endorsement. I was restricted from weights for about 3 months a while back and made due with all movements that envolved moving my body through space. Pushups, pullups, reverse grip pulls sissy squats ect. I had actually made some very impressive development.

No brotha, I disagree. You might be able to add muscle from pushups when you first begin to train, when your body responds to anything, but beyond that, I truly believe muscle growth only occurs with failure at low reps. You gotta hit the heavy free weights if you want really big pecs, it's that simple. Unless maybe, you are a genetic freak...which most of us are not.

The reference that is being made here is to progressive overload and the nature of the resistance training stimulus that results in a hypertrophic adaptations.

The essential aspect of resistance exercise that induces an increase in muscle size is the tensile (force) demand. Pushups provide less than 50% of max tensile overload after you are about to do about 20 to 30 of them in a row. At this point, the resistance provided by gravity (at least during pushups with both arms ; ^ ) ) is not optimal to stimulate hypertrophy. The principle of progressive overload therefore dictates that, if you wish to continue to increase muscle size, that you provide greater resistance. This could be done by:

Adding weight to your back, like a person.
Doing 1 armed pushups with minimal or no assistance from the other arm.
Put your feet up, which slightly increases the resistance (d/t mechanics) as well as makes the exercise more difficult b/c of the angle of resistance against the pectoral girdle muscles (pec major, anterior delt, etc.).

ok this topic has gotten out of hand.people you take the wrong way when i said that.ok heres the scoop, i dislocated my kneecap on my right knee, and tore my left ankle up pretty bad playing basketball.i could walk without cruches for weeks and was on the couch 24/7 so since i didnt have free weights at home i did push ups alot, and some movements with one of those strecty things bb'ers warm up with backstage.,and then once it got better but i could squat real weight i squated with the deck of cards.put down 15 satcks of cards each stack going from 1 card to the last having 15 cards, sqaut pick up card, go to next pile squat put down that card, squat and pick it up, then squat and pick up the next one in the pile, and so on an so on, its alot of squats when u get through.guys i was jus saying how i noticed my chest was getting alot harder from jus push ups and was amazed by it, i was in no way saying only do push ups to get huge!!!

That's cool man. From the first post, and your title of the thread (" push ups as best chest excersise ever?"), it seemed you were saying something else...

If repetition built muscle, why don't we all have Tom Platz legs just from walking around all day? Why don't marathon runners have bodybuilder legs?

I have always loved excercises where you have to lift your own body weight.

Push Ups
Sit Ups
Chin Ups
Dips

But I doubt anyone will argue that Bench Press is King for chest.

Just use variety, add push ups every other week etc...

Variety is the spice of life right?
Just don't tell your wife that or you'll get slapped.
