anyone know anything about auto body work?

i got in a minor accident 2 weeks ago (a little bump) i dented the guys rear bumper and we are settling it outside of our insurance, and saturday the guy calls me with the estimate, $1190 canadian cause he says he needs a new bumper. it's a brand new truck and a moulded bumper. do you guys think i am getting fucked or what?

I seem to be replying to almost all of your posts...anyway, I hope you took photos because you ought to get your own estimates on repair too--after all, it's your money. Take some photos (with a witness) and bring them with you to a decent mechanic of your choice. They should be able to give you a fair estimate if you took detailed photos. There should be no reason the other guy would refuse to let you do that unless you went to some really, really cheap place. The pictures also help protect your ass if he decides to sue you anyway.

My dad has an 04 GMC 4x4, and he just crushed his front bumper completely, along with the grill, hood, and tailgate. He used the best and most expensive body shop in town (semi-friend of his), got a new bumper, new grill, new hood, and new tailgate, and it was only $2500 US. That was the inflated insurance company price too.

That is an acccurate estimate for a moulded (plastic) bumper. However a junkyard could get you 1 for 1/4 the price if you do the bolting on yourself. Damn plastic can't be beaten back into shape.

i have good luck. i got a buddy who is the head in an auto body shop and has offered me a favor. he says the bumper prolly doesn't have to get replaced, but i fit does he will only charge me for materials and charge me factory direct prices. (it's good to have friends in high places. thanks for the info.

actually when i first hit the guy i told him that i have a freind that does auto body work, and he was all for the idea. he's a good guy, i see him all the time and i play rugby against him. he always tries to recruit me to play on his team. i just hope his mechanic doesn't convince him against my idea.
