stay consistent in training them, and stay consistent in eating tons of high quality food. they will start growing, just probably slower than other bodyparts.

how about your routine and diet to help give a more accurate answer...

big bump.for some its reps, some weight some both etc..just try things and learn waht works

Most muscle groups I believe in intensity over volume. Forearms and calves are the exception to my general belief.
The best exercises for calves IMO are standing heel raises of 4 sets of 15 to 25 reps to failure and 2 sets of 3 minute farmers walk with the absolute heaviest weight you can carry with the hands and support straps. I do not believe in using both during same session. Also if you decide on the farmer's walk, take at least 2 months of using lighter weights to work up to the productive regimen.. This exercise is a real killer for gastronemius, trapezius, obliques, and forearms and a newbie can be injured for months for jumping into the exercise too heavy too fast.
Edit: Be sure to fully stretch and extend the foot during either regimen.

my calves were like 15 inches before i could get them to grow. i've been doing i workset twice a week rest pause to 15-20 reps. they are finally growing, and it's the perfect routine for me. give it a try if you like.

also make sure you're developing both heads of the calves. seated calf raises hit the soleus mostly, and standing hits the gastrocnemius mostly. here is a pic to help you better understand the calf muscle's anatomy. the gastrocnemius sits on top of the soleus.

I just do 10 sets of 5 reps for standing calf raises, and 10 sets of 5 reps for seated. Get used to handling incredibly heavy poundages with your calves!

They are growing...

I just do them every other day on leg press, 5 sets ... start off with 5 plates then bump it up a plate every set and keep reps around 12-15, I just do it at end of my work out. And of course lots of food to grow.

frequency

i truely believe the calves MUST be worked more than once a week to see any real growth. some pros hit them everyday.

I used to slam them once a week, but my calves never responded well to that.

I would say 2-3 training days a week depending on how well you recover. Use moderate weight and around 15-20 reps.

I do 5 sets of standing calf raises and 5 sets of seated calf raises two or three times a week depending on how they feel.

Give that a whirl.

THe biggest my calves have ever been was when i trained them every day. I was in high school and didn't really realize what to do. I would only do 4 sets or so, but till it burned really bad. That was enough.

I'm about to start trying that again. I think that you can work calves as soon as they aren't sore. If that's the next day, go at it. If it's two days later, great. I think calves can take a lot and are almost impossible to overtrain.

Exactly what I was going to say as well. I load up the smith machine bar with some heavy weight, put something under your toes like a stepper and start doing standing calve raises with some heavy weight. It's been working well for me. Good luck!

Calves are mostly made up of the endurance type fibers, which is why they respond to high number of repetitions. They are also extremely dense so they can quickly adapt to handling heavy weight, which is why you really have to blitz them. In Arnold's "Education of a Bodybuilder," he mentions how he would use 150 lbs. then watch his idol Reg Park run it up to 500 and crank out 10 reps. Arnold says then that after he started training his calves like his idol was when his calf development really took off.

Amen...
I use the leg press machine and go heavy 3 times a week.
Unfortunately our leg press machine only goes up to 10 plates per side, so that is what I use for calf raises...

If you wanna see some serious calf growth you must use HEAVY weights, go over to the standing calf raise machine and your first set should be with a weight that is twice your bodyweight! I know it sounds like quite a bit of weight but your body can handle it, think about it, let's say your 200lbs you can stand on one leg right? So each leg can support 200lbs, how do you expect to get huge calfs with only 200lbs then? Won't happen, seriously give my method a try, i found out about this in Arnold's Bodybuilding Bible :) works like a charm. Go for 8-10 reps

I just want to agree with the notion that calves need to be worked more than once per week. I'd say twice/week is a minimum, with three times being better.

For me, one workout will be reps, and the next will be super heavy.

I work them out once a week, 3 sets on the leg press, heavy weight, and my calves grow.

(my leg press has a half tube type thing on the bottom that you can place the balls of your feet on to work out calves)

you want great calves!!!!!
try skipping, great cardio and awesome calf workout
just think, your body weight bouncing on those calves rep after rep. 3 or 4 times aweek.
