Bodybuilder with BALCO indicted in steroids case

By PETE CAREY

San Jose Mercury News

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A prominent California bodybuilder with ties to BALCO Laboratories has been indicted, along with two other men, by a federal grand jury in Des Moines, Iowa, in an alleged conspiracy to import illegal steroids from Thailand.

The three are Milos Sarcev of Temecula, Calif., Admir Kantarevic of Des Moines, and Dennis James, a U.S. citizen reportedly arrested on drug charges last February in Thailand.

Sarcev, a former Mr. Yugoslavia, is a friend of Victor Conte Jr., the president of Balco, who faces federal drug charges in San Francisco. Sarcev spoke up for Conte in February when Conte's indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. Sarcev designed workouts for some of Conte's prominent clients.

Reports of a grand jury investigation into bodybuilding surfaced in March, when grand jury subpoenas were handed to a number of bodybuilders at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's annual bodybuilding event in Ohio. After seemingly casting a wide net, the investigation apparently has narrowed down to the three indictments announced Monday. Sarcev's lawyer, Rick Collins, said he understands the indictment is based on ``one single box of steroids that was found in the mail.''

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Des Moines released little information beyond the indictments and possible penalties.

The trio is accused of conspiring to import in 2003 a mixture containing an illegal steroid. Additionally, Sarcev, 40, and Kantarevic, 33, are accused of importing the mixture, and Kantarevic is accused of possession of the substance. All three have pleaded not guilty. A trial is scheduled for Jan. 3. The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison or a $250,000 fine, or both, according to the U.S. Attorney's office in Des Moines.

Collins observed that Sarcev was not charged with possession or distribution. ``Even a person who was convicted under these facts would face a maximum punishment of far, far less than five years,'' Collins said.

James, 35, is a professional bodybuilder who lives in Pattaya City, Thailand. He reportedly was arrested there in February after signing for a shipment from Germany of human growth hormone and 18 tablets of the club drug Ecstasy, according to several bodybuilding Web sites that quoted a Thai newspaper story. The story said that Thai and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents seized his computer and suspected James of importing banned drugs while running a local gym.

His lawyer, Paul D. Scott of Des Moines, said James will fight the grand jury's charges.

``Dennis is denying any kind of importation at all of anabolic steroids,'' said Scott, who said he is unaware of the status of the Thailand charges but that James is fighting those as well. ``He's not involved in any importation, or any agreement with anybody, let alone the people that have been indicted here.''

A lawyer representing Kantarevic could not be reached for comment.

March story tells what was gonna hapen

Sarcev had to have known it was coming or going to happen to him. Look at this news blog of a May article.

Reports: Steroid probe widening
Staff and wire reports
The search of the home of a bodybuilder who is affiliated with BALCO and who helped train track world recordholder Tim Montgomery could be a signal that the investigation into the distribution of illegal substances is expanding.
ESPN first reported the news that the Temecula, Calif., home of Milos Sarcev, a veteran bodybuilder from Yugoslavia, was raided late last year by Drug Enforcement Administration agents. ESPN also reported that a second grand jury had been impaneled in Des Moines to investigate the distribution of steroids.

The DEA would neither confirm nor deny this.

Bodybuilder Shawn Ray told The (San Jose) Mercury News that he had been questioned by DEA agents in connection with the second grand jury.

The focus of the probe so far has involved Major League Baseball, the NFL and track stars.

Last weekend, at a bodybuilders competition in Columbus, Ohio, five subpoenas were served to bodybuilders.

Four people affiliated with BALCO, including CEO Victor Conte, have been indicted in the probe. None are athletes, although Barry Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, has been indicted. Sarcev is a friend of Conte's.

The lawyer for Sarcev told The New York Times that he doesn't sell steroids.

Sarcev allegedly helped Montgomery with a strengthening program before he set his record in the 100 meters in 2002. Montgomery and his partner, Olympian Marion Jones, have testified before the BALCO grand jury.

I just will never understand why they bust SOME people, but not EVERYONE?

Obviously Ronnie Coleman and ANY Pro Bodybuilder does steroids.

Either bust, arrest and ban ALL of them or fuck off and leave everyone alone to do what they have the right to do with their own bodies.

It's just stupid how random and pointless it is. Instead of helping anyone, the only thing they are doing is wrecking peoples lives, taking away loving fathers from their children and forcing mothers to become a single mother and support families themseves.

The Police are destroying families and decent loving caring homes.

And for what?

Hell, it say it right in the article for Dennis James - he imported GROWTH HORMONE and ecstacy - I don't see any anabolic steroids.

Ecstacy is probably the reason he was busted. DEA watches over that stuff like a hawk. If you stick to your source, order only what you need, and dont go runnin your mouth about what your on; then their is no reason why you should have DEA knockin on your door.

Im sure the Vets will tell you the same thing!!

True rec drugs are of alot more interest to feds than gear but it seems that is changing with the new laws now that allow them to "pen and trap" email accounts without warrants to see who/where suspected steroid dealers are emailing, the PH ban, etc, etc.

It looks as though 2005 will have many more people getting busted, arrested and packs getting seized with the extension of law enforcement powers so just be careful.

Dennis James was later released after the Feb. bust, he was recently at the Mr. O competition and got 8th, he was arrested again after the competition, he has bee released again and is now back in Pattaya..(according to what I've been told)

WTF? hey lets turn in guys who sell rec drugs and it will leave them so busy they have to leave steroids alone huh? j/k, i dont get half this crap, and what about my right to freedom of speech and privacy did all that go out the window too?

i dont get half this shit ya know.

FYI-- Bush, in his State of the Union Address a couple years ago, told this country he was going after "preformance enhancing drugs" (PEDs).

Regan and Nancy went after rec drugs, W. has said little about those.... he has metion PEDs many times. Its one of his big things. If you look around, you'll see he's already got the formally nutrition store look-alikes ("legal" test analogs) on the DEAs watch list.

Think what you want of W, but know he is coming down on all PEDs as much as he can. It sucks, but at least he's fairly inept.

Were I selling the look-alikes on the web, I'd be pretty nervous right about now. If Bonds ain't safe, you sure as hell aren't.

you can still be safe right now, Bonds let an unreliable and cowardly man know him personally, thats what got him and the others in trouble, if I was a big name athlete, and wanted to juice, I wouldnt go where all the other big name people were going, thats a perfect story of a bad thing ready to happen, stay discrete with someone that has little credability in the community, that way, if you get busted its your word against his, unless hes a cop, but then its only you that went down and not a hundred people!!!
