Giambi said he injected himself with human growth hormone in 2003 and used steroids for at least three seasons, according to a grand jury transcript reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle.

His testimony last December, before a federal grand jury investigating illegal steroid distribution, contradicts his public proclamations that he never used performance-enhancing drugs.

Penalties for steroid use in baseball began in 2003, but testing that identified players didn't start until the next season. Human growth hormone, or hGH, is not specifically banned by the major leagues.

While discipline is spelled out for positive tests and criminal convictions, admission of steroid use is not addressed, possibly giving Selig an opening to punish Giambi. Even so, baseball can't test him more than other players because it's been over a year since the steroid use.

Selig repeatedly has called for year-round random testing and harsher penalties, but management and the players' association have failed to reach an agreement. The contract runs through the 2006 season.

Giambi, the 2000 American League MVP with Oakland, signed a seven-year contract with the Yankees before the 2002 season, the sixth-highest deal in baseball history.

Bothered by an injured knee, Giambi hit just .250 in 2003. He batted .208 and played in only 80 games last season, missing time because of a sprained right ankle, fatigue and a benign tumor, which the New York Daily News reported was in his pituitary gland. The Yankees did not even include him on their postseason roster.

Giambi reportedly testified that one of the drugs he thought he used was Clomid, a female fertility drug that some medical experts say can exacerbate a pituitary tumor.

especially that last part about clomid

Steroid use in baseball is nothing new. Its been going on for prob 20 years. BALCO is what has drawn attention to baseball.

What a person puts in his/her body is his/her s own business. As long as your educated and willing to suffer the (possible) consequences it should be allowed.

we know that but they dont, we are all gonna have to be more careful in the future, dont be the "Giambi" they make an example out of

They are just scratching the surface now. If they think that Pro's don't involve gear in their training then they are idiots. Look at all the huge linemen in the NFL. I mean please...300+ and running 440 under 6 sec. look at the size of all the NHL players, NBA ....need I say more. Men's health mag posted an article that said 1 in 3 men today are using steroids. They say it has reached epidemic proportions. But they also state that the is little proof of long term effects and that they aren't bad for you with proper use.
More education is what the public needs....

did anyone believe that most of these athletes were clean before all this BALCO sh!t became public anyway? Athletes have been using performance enhancing substances for CENTURIES and they will most likely will continue to do so no matter how stringent the testing is. Everybody wants an edge in what ever they do and with a little creativity and ingenuity, there is little to stop it.

IMO I'd rather watch a 300+ lineman who can run a sub 5 sec 40 take out a QB than a 270 lb lineman who runs a 6+ sec 40 any day. Performance sells.

tru, but there are no real penalties. The player is advised of their rights and told to seek therapy for the first offense and in my understanding several later offenses. I It hasn't been a secret about steroid use in major league baseball i can remember specific players back to the eghties.

pro sports

all of us the circle know about gear & sports, what moron wouldn't gear up for 120 million $ contract..there are thousands gearing for nothing. the pulic wants to see it but want shut there eyes to how it gets done

can you believe the extents that our government is going to educate students about the use of AAS. I agree with educating them, but teaching them that they are bad just CAUSE!!! I had to tottally get into an argument with a professor the otherday, she said that steroids like dbol make athletes literally grow without even weight lifting. I hate doing that because then i look like the "roid head" in the crowd, but gotta set em straight!

good for you bignick, i always stand up for false statements made about aas, and yes it makes me feel like a juice-head, and yes the public needs more TRUTH
