Who still one-rep maxes?

I know a few of you still do. Are you afraid of injury?

I personally don't do a 1 repper for anything. Sure it would be nice to know that numbers, but it really doesn't matter - does it?

Hell NO, why do it?? It doesnt cause muscle growth or density. All it does is feed the ego and increase the chance of injury.

My ego needs no more feeding as is...

But agreed 100%.

I just want to get a feel from the guys who still do.

I do it often on large muscle groups and deads. I go proper, no jerking, and never had an injury. Not sure about muscle density, can't imagine it doesn't cause growth though because you get stronger quicker.

Jay, seems like I do, maybe I'm wrong though. Isn't low heavy reps better for strength than high light reps? A lot of powerlifters I know max out 1 rep often. I'm not suggesting going to the gym everyday and doing only 1 rep of everything. I like to max deads, bench, squats, at least once a month on my last set. I may be wrong , teach me

Well its one thing to do sets for lets say 5 and then then crank out more sets of just one and then its something completely different to go in and max out. No you wont grow from just maxing out.

If you mean something like this 6-5-5-3-1-1-1 then you can grow and yes there are perlifters who incorporate a regimen like this from time to time but if you mean warmup with some sets and then max out, NO you wont grwo from that.

da_fonz, I just misunderstood I guess when read one rep maxes. I usually do a typical 10, 8, 6 or 8, 6, 4. But sometimes on days I feel really strong and pissed I keep stacking doing one rep after that till I crash. Usually about once a month, it seems like its worked well. Sorry just misunderstood.

i will occasionally try a heavy deadlift, because i dont usually deadlift for reps. but i wont do it that often. i usually do heavy reps for the rest of my body.

I do it because it's a goal I set for myself and I try hard to meet that goal. When I do, I know I'm making progress and I feel really good. I finally hit 200 max on christmas and that got me super motivated because I never did it before. I then set 225 and I hit that this afternoon.

Now I'm shooting for 250 and feeling more motivation than ever before. I always warm up first with some lighter sets leading up to it though. Bench is the only one I try to max out on.

the lowest i ever go is 6, maybe for confidence w/ a weight i would do a 3 repper but never lower. thats just asking for a tear.

Zylo, I can remember my 300lb. bench day like it was yesterday (14 years ago). I got 302 actually as we had plates clear down to the pound. Thought I'd never get there, what was cool was I bet all my friends to that wall. Anyway keep it up son. Deadlifts and standing military presses will help push it up quick.

yeah i like to do them when i do pyramids.....but i rarely do them, that wouldnt really be a one rep max though would it

zylo, im with u man, when i max out, it is basically just to see where i am at and see how much strength i am gaining, but its not like a everyday thing or nuthin, just occasional, and yes stretching and warming up with lighter weights is a must.
