How many here use straps when lifting???

I for one try not to use them to often since I noticed that when I used straps all the time my grip strength weakened considerably. I use chalk for the most part, yup I'm that ass who leaves chalk on the bars when you step into the squat rack and sometimes in the power cage. I use chalk for snatches, power cleans, deadlifts, etc.

So lets here it and what exercises you use straps for. Anyone else here use chalk???

I use straps for bent over dumbell rows, lat pull downs, deadlifts, reverse ez bar curls, barbell/dumbell shrugs and cable rows. I also use gloves w/straps, my hands take enough of a beating at work, I dont need sand paper palms and I like the help.

I use gloves all the time, mainly for the wrist wrap that comes with them. But i use straps when doing deads, hang cleans and shrugs.

doesnt that kill your wrists when doin hang cleans??? That would kill mine, thats why i use chalk and it works fine, i can clean a decent amont and not loose my grip, most of the time lol.

i use my straps through my whole back workout, including deads, and also shrugs. i would never want to sacrifice heavy reps or sets for grip strength. i train forearms consistently so my grip strength is pretty solid as well as the size. as long as you can hold on to your heaviest deadlift without straps, i would say thats pretty good grip strength.

yea straps hurt a lil bit when doin cleans but my gloves have a wrist wrap on them so its keeps my wrists pretty stable when I do them.

i'm with db006, i use straps for all my back work because i dont want to sacrifice strength/weight just to work my grip. unless you need to have a good grip for something (like powerlifting) i dont see why someone wouldn't use them. i also chalk up when doing presses because my hands are always pretty sweaty. i think forearms are a lot like calves in that they are very genetically predetermined. all i ever do for forearms is a few sets of incline db hammer curls.

I'll use straps for dumbbell rows or shrugs. Of course that is with heavier weight.

I haven't put on my straps in 3-4 months though.

Since I injured my forearm I've been using wrist support straps for pretty much all my exercises though.

I always use gloves

Dont get me wrong i do use straps from time to time. I will use them when i'm pushing near my max on tings like deads to ensure i can pull out a couple more, but only when its near or at a max lift. I dont wear them for cleans or snatches b/c once you start doing 250 and higher for cleans ur wrists need the ability to move with some freedom. I dont usually wear them for bent over rows, but i do wear them for wide grip pullups to help knock out a couple more at the end.

I need to use them with the weight I push because I'm like, heck of strong.

Really tho, I do use them, I figure I can strengthen my grip in other ways, If I'm working lats, I want my lats to tell me how much weight to use, not my grip.

I use straps b/c I feel like they let me concentrate on working the muscle I want, not just holding onto the weight.

I use gloves,..i tried straps for cleans and it killed my wrist bad,...Maybe i just have weak wrists,........but i will never use the again...

I started using straps for shrugs about a month ago, and the amount of additional weight I could add has been great - my traps have been sore for the whole time!

I agree it can allow your grip to not develop as fast, but it also prevents your gains on other exercises being limited by what you can hold in your hands.

When I started using straps, I revised my forearm workout so I can compensate a bit.

No, it doesnt mean you have weak wrists, wearin straps when doing cleans will hinder the wrists ability to "snap" , the essential motion, and get under the bar at the top of the movement just before you finish the movement. Try them again without the straps and I'll bet you'll be fine. Another important thing is hand postioning when doing cleans. You dont want to place your hands any closer than shoulder width apart b/c this will cause excess pressure on the wrists during the movement. You will find that the motion is quite easier when you widen the grip to a little bit (3-5inches) past shoulder width. This will allow the person to snap the wrists that much easier. I can make a post about proper technique if ya want Mo or just hit me up on IM.

LMAO, you use straps when you push??? huh, i always thought they were for pulling movements like bench. dummy!

I barely ever use straps if i do it's on my last couple sets of barbell rows or shrugs, haven't used straps on deads in a LONGtime but i'm going to start using them again because right now that's what's stopping me from going heavier, so i'll just go back after to increase my grip.

Yeah, I only use straps on really heavy sets of deads or shrugs that are well past my grip strength.
