Lower back health.

I just wanted to make a quick post for those who have lower back issues. Number one always check with a doctor. For me I did not have any actual injuries, just tended to be a bit sore in the area like many others I am sure. Lower back was an area I neglected in training because of this. I could not have been more wrong! I have since included dead lifts and extensions into my workouts and do both styles twice a week. I had to get over an initial mucsle soreness but that was only temporary. Now I have to say I do not have any more lower back soreness. My squatting has improved as well and I used to be very sensative to the squat. Now I have a greatly developed lower back, no more pains and I think a greater overall strenth.

Deadlifts have also helped me get rid of my lower back pain as well. Excellent exercise!

I actually have had a herniated disc in my lower back. Worst pain I have ever felt. Couldn't even get dressed and had surg. Doc said I would never lift again. Now, I am lifting heavier and harder than ever. BUT with good form. I give credit to deads for this. Strengthening the area allows me to protect it from injury as well as maintain better form in lifts like the squat where core stability is so important. If there was one lift I could do, it would be deads. By far my fav...I only do them every other week though do to the way they zap me.

I hurt my lower back early on deadlifting and had an extremely difficult time getting over it. So for any newbies reading this start on the deads slowly and build the weight up, don't be in a big hurry to show off how much you can lift.

9 times out of 10 your lower back pain or weakness can be attributed to weak abs as a result of neglecting your ab workouts, work and build up your abs and i gaurentee the lower back weakness or pain will subside a great deal, unless ofcourse their is a more serious underlying problem ie. disc problems etc...

Great point presser.

True, true. I forgot about that. Having strong abs is also paramount to having a pain-free back.

I didn't realise that the abs were important to the lower back, but it makes a lot of sense. Thanks for point that out.

as someone with an serious SI problem for years, I started DL's and the pain went away. I 'd definetly recommend them

Presser brings up a good point in needing strong abs but don't overlook your back extensions because that's how I ended up with back and shoulder problems. I didn't have access to a back extension at the time and did more and more ab work and threw off the balance between abs and lower back. My abs became stronger and the muscles became tighter which caused me to slouch forward some and threw everything out of alignment... If I had been doing dead lifts at the time it could have been prevented
