After a two-plus year absence from the organization, Seth Petruzelli's return to the UFC is official.
The man perhaps best known for defeating Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson in a 2008 EliteXC event has been officially announced for a UFC 116 bout with light heavyweight newcomer Ricardo Romero (10-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC).
Featuring a heavyweight title unification bout between belt holders Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, "UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin" takes place July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Petruzelli (12-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) first announced his return to the UFC via his Twitter account earlier this month.
Petruzelli initially found his way to the UFC after a semifinal finish on "The Ultimate Fighter 2." While fighting as a heavyweight, the current 205-pounder defeated Dan Christison but then dropped a close split decision to eventual show runner-up Brad Imes in the semis and was knocked out of the eight-man tourney.
After losses to Matt Hamill and Wilson Gouveia, Petruzelli received his UFC walking papers. He's since posted a 4-0 record over a three-year span. No win, though, garnered as much as attention as the victory over Ferguson, who at the time was undefeated.
Romero recently began training at AMA Fight Club alongside UFC veterans Jim Miller, Dan Miller and Charlie Brenneman. He holds a victory over current UFC heavyweight James McSweeney, and more than half of his professional victories come by way of first-round stoppage. In his most recent fight, Romero notched a first-round submission against Silmar Rodrigo at Ring of Combat 27
