Mass Consumption - Feeding a 300+ Pound MUTANT
I've spoken often about how I've never had a large appetite. Not one to suit the size of my body, or the size I want it to be, anyways. There are definitely times that I can put food away, no question. There are times when I surprise even myself. However, more often than not, I struggle to eat. Sometimes, meals seem to take forever. 45 minutes to eat a plate of steak and rice...Sounds a little long, doesn't it? Ya, I'm the slowest eater at the table every time I go out with friends.
So, the fact I have a smaller appetite often makes the first several weeks of contest dieting pretty easy. In fact, I have to remember to have my meals on time, because I don't get hungry very often. I will say, that towards the end when my body is very lean, is the only time of year that I really have a crazy appetite. It's the only time of year I can eat my meals in 5 minutes, and never feel bloated or indifferent towards food.
However, during the rest of the year, one of the biggest obstacles in my daily routine is getting all my meals in. Over the years, I've learned when things get really tough, I benefit from switching things up a lot. Trying out new combos of carbs and proteins, using different fat sources, and finding something that I really like. When I get sick of rice, I'll go to yams for a while. When I get sick of ground beef and chicken, I'll swap to fish and turkey. Little things to break the routine.
One thing that I have found lately that I am very excited about, is the Crock Pot slow cooker. I've heard of people using them, but I never looked into it. I was so used to cooking my meat all the other ways, like oven, and BBQ. I just started using the Crock Pot, and I can't believe how much I like it. Here's what I do:
Recipe
1.5-2kg Sirloin Roast (any cut will do, depending on how lean you want it. Maybe use some kind of round cut roast if you want it leaner)
1.5kg potato
500g chopped carrots
1 cup beef broth
1 cup BBQ sauce
sea salt
black pepper
That's about as simple as a recipe can get. Sometimes I'll add other veggies, but I keep it pretty plain. Just trim the beef and chop the roast into 5-6 pieces, then chop all the potato into halves. Dump everything into the cooker, and stir it up a bit. I like to cook it on Low, for 8 hours. Right now, I set it right before bed, and then I wake up to a house that smells like a roast beef dinner. I actually wake up hungry with my mouth watering!
By cutting the roast into pieces, cooking it on slow, and adding the BBQ sauce and Broth, you wind up with a super tender beef that falls apart when you try to dish it up. At least, that's what you want to happen.
For now, it's working. I have 2-3 meals per day from this pot, and those meals only take 10-20 minutes to eat because they are so damn good!
I usually get 5-6 large meals out of this recipe.
