Mucuna pruriens, also called velvet bean or cowitch, is a commonly known legume that grows in tropical regions and its extracts are used for a variety of purposes including treatment of diseases, development of muscle mass and enhancement of libido. The extracts of this shrub have been in the news recently for research on its therapeutic usages for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Reported Effects
1) Improves muscle mass.
2) Reduces body fats.
3) Boosts natural testosterone.
4) Stimulate HGH release

Reported effects include:

Enhances muscle mass – Mucuna pruriens is a complete supplement for bodybuilders and weightlifters for enhancing their muscle mass. The bean extracts of mucuna pruriens are used as a dietary supplement that induces the production of testosterone in the human body.

This hormone in turn induces growth of muscle cells which is essential for bodybuilders and athletes who perform strenuous physical activities.

Helps with gaining weight post heavy exercise – Most bodybuilders and athletes take supplements containing mucuna pruriens to regain their weight that they lose after severe exercise. This helps in retaining the stamina to increase performance during weight training sessions.

Promotes production of growth hormones – One of the key elements in the extracts of mucuna pruriens is L-Dopa – an amino acid. This amino acid contains natural inducers that encourages the body to release growth hormones naturally.

Helps improve functioning of the brain – L-Dopa easily gets converted to a form called dopamine which is essential for our brain to function properly.

Promotes sound sleep – Supplements containing mucuna pruriens are also reported to help provide on with a quality sleep.

Reduces body fat – It is also commonly believed that mucuna pruriens extracts break down fat within cells in the body thereby promoting development of lean muscle.

Enhances libido – L-Dopa, in combination with dopamine, restricts the formation of prolactine hormones within the pituitary glands. As a result, a decrease in prolactine level helps eliminate erectile dysfunction due to an enhanced libido.

Possibly can treat Parkinson’s disease – Recent reports have shown that mucuna pruriens inhibits certain properties that can be leveraged for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in human.

Possible Dangers
There have been no reported dangers or side effects from taking mucuna pruriens supplements. Higher doses of this supplement may however result in increased body temperature, and therefore is not recommended for pregnant women.

FDA Approved?
Mucuna pruriens has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Studies
According to various recent studies, mucuna pruriens supplements have been found to be effective for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Reports suggest that the L-dopa properties induce the production of dopamine – a neurotransmitter hormone. Increased production of dopamine helps smoothen stiff muscle cells and prevents them from trembling – both of which are symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Certain studies have also proposed beneficial usage of this shrub extract for people suffering from diabetes. The hypoglycemic properties of this supplement are known to reduce the sugar levels in the body and therefore can reduce the symptoms of diabetes.
The bean of mucuna pruriens is known to also have anti-oxidant properties and therefore the supplements created from roasted beans of this shrub are used as a hot beverage for increasing the body’s testosterone.
Many studies have also proposed that Mucuna Pruriens has shown positive results for various other purposes including improvement of mood, feeling of well-being, may help reverse osteoporosis, strengthen the immune system, and help regenerate certain body organs. However, these results need more research to be proven.

In 1970, Boyd and colleagues found that a 500mg oral dose ?"caused a significant rise in plasma growth hormone in PD patients, initially starting therapy or on chronic L-dopa therapy for as long as 11 months. The rise in plasma growth hormone persisted for 120 minutes after the administration of the drug." (4). Boden and his co-workers gave 500mg of the drug orally to four male and five female volunteers. "HGH levels rose sharply at 45 minutes from the basal value of 0.8mg/ml, to a maximum of 10.0mg/ml at 90 minutes (p<0.001) and declined thereafter. This rise occurred in eight of the nine subjects." (5). Hayek and Crawford reported that six out of seven "constitutionally short children" responded to oral L-dopa (200-500mg), "?with elevations in HGH concentration above 7mg/ml, peak levels occurring between 30 and 120 minutes after drug administration..". (6).

Conclusion
Supplements of mucuna pruriens have been used for a wide range of purposes, including increased muscle mass, decreased fat content, and balanced body weight.

I've been using mucuna prurien extract at 500mg 95% extract levodopa, sleep soundly and wake up looking lean and tight. Will say my skin looks better too. Only been a week, but there is definitely some positive effects to this.

I've used this... Too much = mind warp LMAO it can cause hallucinations from what I read never OD'd it but it upsets my stomach terribly. Great post.

Levodopa is actually an RX used to treat Parkinson's disease, one of the active ingredients is Sinimet (carbidopa-Levodopa) It's got its pro's and con's like everything, Mucuna Pruriens is well known for its high concentration of it. Like guardian noted it can cause some strange side effects if used irresponsibly. Best if used in doses at 250 to 500 mg Preworkout and at bedtime, for periods of 4 to 8 weeks with a break of equal time off.

Just my opinion. Stuff is legit though, I sleep DEEP when I take this. Wake up easy and refreshed off less than 7 hours. For example I took some slept like 5 hours and woke up feeling like I got the best sleep ever!! Went through the whole day without any "jet lag" so to speak from a crappy short nights sleep.

Good stuff!
