UFC officials on Friday confirmed to MMA Fighting Borg’s release from contract after his withdrawal from UFC Vegas 5 earlier this month. His manager, Ali Abdelaziz, declined comment on the release.
Borg was scratched from a bout against Nathan Maness on the Aug. 1 card for undisclosed reasons. It marked his second straight withdrawal after his son’s health prompted him to bow out of a fight against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC on ESPN 10.
The 27-year-old MMA vet has struggled to maintain consistency amid a string of troubles outside the cage. He’s repeatedly had trouble making weight, coming in heavy on three occasions as a flyweight and once as a bantamweight. After a miss at 125 pounds in February, he was ordered back to bantamweight, where he lost a split decision to Ricky Simon in his most recent outing at UFC Jacksonville.
In 2018, Borg revealed his newborn son was diagnosed with rare brain condition, hydrocephalus, that required 12 separate surgeries. The MMA community rallied around him, and several well-known fighters offered financial assistance.
Even on his way to the cage, Borg faced some seriously bad luck. Two days before the blockbuster UFC 223 card in April 2018, he was forced to withdraw after he was struck in the eye by flying shards of glass during Conor McGregor’s infamous bus attack.
Borg leaves the promotion with a 7-5 record. He owns wins over flyweight standouts Jussier Formiga and Louis Smolka and nearly went the distance with dominant champ Demetrious Johnson before submitting to a spectacular fifth-round armbar.
UFC Vegas 5 was one of the most chaotic cards in recent history for the promotion. Several fighters were forced off the card before showtime, even moments before stepping into the octagon.
