Jones, who took the bout on two days’ notice after the withdrawal of newcomer Mark Streigl, checked Valiev with a right hook to set up the finish at the 1:59 mark of the second round.

The ending was all the more impressive considering the round before it. Valiev, a teammate of UFC on ESPN 15 headliner Frankie Edgar, came out of the gate looking nothing short of phenomenal. Jones appeared out of his depth against a constant volley of attacks, with Valiev using the entire spectrum of striking techniques to catch his opponent off guard.
Most effective was a body shot that visibly hurt Jones, who sunk to the canvas and covered up for dear life. Valiev flurried away and landed punch after punch against Jones, who was stuck against the fence. Somehow, Jones managed to survive the onslaught and showed a veteran’s poise in getting a late-round takedown.

Valiev came out looking for the finish in the second, but instead was shocked by a counter off his leg kick. Jones pounced and pounded away with punches and hammerfists to secure the upset finish, picking up his third straight win in the process. Valiev saw a six-fight winning streak snapped.
