Ion Cutelaba vs. Magomed Ankalaev is off. Again. | Esther Lin, MMA Fighting Ion Cutelaba and Magomed Ankalaev won’t be fighting at Saturday night’s UFC Vegas 8 after all, the company announced just hours before the event.
According to a statement released by the UFC, the light heavyweight showdown was removed from the Fight Night lineup “due to a positive COVID-19 test,” and the company will re-schedule the bout.
Cutelaba (15-5, 1 no contest) and Ankalaev (13-1) first fought in February and the fight ended in controversy since “The Hullk” complained about an early stoppage. Cutelaba’s team tried to officially appeal the result, but the 38-second knockout result was maintained.
The UFC quickly booked a rematch for April 18, but the entire UFC 249 show was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fight was again scheduled for Aug. 15, but Cutelaba tested positive for coronavirus. It’s still unclear who tested positive this time.
UFC Vegas will proceed with 10 bouts. Anthony Smith takes on Aleksandar Raki? in a 205-pound headliner, while former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler returns against Neil Magny in the co-main event.
